The issues of the seniors who take care of their adult mentally disabled children.

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo posoudit, jak senioři, kteří pečují o své dospělé dítě s mentálním postižením, tuto péči zvládají. Dalším cílem případové studie, bylo zjistit, jak plánují tito senioři péči o své mentálně postižené děti v budoucnosti, až již sami nebudou schopni ji zajistit a do jaké míry v současné době využívají nabídky sociálních služeb. Metodika: Do souboru byli zařazeni pečující a jejich mentálně postižené dospělé děti, kteří jsou registrováni ve stejné ambulanci praktického lékaře. Výzkum probíhal formou nestandardizovaných rozhovorů. Výběr rodin pro zpracování případové studie byl záměrný. Byly vybrány všechny rodiny registrované v ordinaci praktického lékaře, které mají mentálně postižené dítě v dospělém věku. Rozhovor byl veden i s pracovníky ústavu pro mentálně postižené. Výsledky: Oblasti, které vidí jako problematické zkoumané rodiny: sdělení o postižení dítěte; finanční problémy rodiny nebo obavy z nich; obavy z budoucnosti; zdravotní potíže pečujících; pocit přetížení pečujících; využití sociálních služeb; volný čas pečujících o samotě; obavy ze sexuality postižených; komunikace s postiženým. Závěr: Rodiče pečující o dítě s mentálním postižením se musí vyrovnat s faktem, že postižení dítěte je pro rodinu v mnohém omezující a limitující, vyžadující od nich spoustu fyzických i psychických sil. Životní hodnoty a cíle rodičů dětí s mentálním postižením jsou podobné, jako má většinová populace. Z našeho výzkumu vyplývá, že je potřeba věnovat zvýšenou pozornost zejména zajištění kvality života pečujících seniorů. Je důležité podpořit tyto rodiny v péči o své mentálně postižené dospělé dítě, pomoci jim se smiřovat se zhoršujícím se zdravotním stavem svým i jejich dítěte, s nutností plánovat péči o mentálně postiženého, až ji sami nezvládnou, poradit v komunikaci s orgány státní správy při uznávání finanční podpory. Vyslechnout jejich trápení a podle možností nalézat řešení.

Abstract:

The aim: The principal aim of the work was to survey how parents who take care of their adult mentally handicapped children are able to manage thein care. A secondary purpose of the work was to find out how these parents plan the care of their mentally handicapped children for the future when they will not be able to care for them themselves. A further aim was to discover the extent to which they make use of services provided by the social services. Metodology: The test sample was all those parents who care for mentally handicapped children from one GP?s practice who cares for adults. Research was carried out by non-standartized interview. The above families were selected for the case study deliberately. In addition social workers from the institute for the mentally handicapped were interviewed. Results: There are some common areas that all families see as problematic: communication about the disability of the child, financial problems of the family or the fear of them, worry about the future, health problems of the caring parents, feeling overloaded, engagement with the social services, free time for carers , the fear of sexuality concerning the handicapped, communication with the disabled. Conclusion: The parents of children with a mental disability have to accept the fact that the disability of their children creates limitations for the family, and that they require a lot of physical and mental strength. The life values and goals of the parents of mentally disabled children are similar to those in the majority of the population. The results show that it is necessary to emphasise the need to provide a good quality of life for caring adults. It is important to support these families in the care of their mentally handicapped adult children, to help them to embrace their own deteriorating health and the health problems of their children too. It is also important to help them with planning the care of the mentally ill in the future, when they will not be able to manage themselves. In addition the families need help in communications with government authorities in respect of financial support. It is also very important that they are listen and they are helped to find solutions according to the circumstances of each case.
