Tato práce zkoumá využití referenda, jakožto nejvíce používaného nástroje přímé demokracie. Popisuje vývoj přímé demokracie od jejích počátků a srovnává ji s demokracií v dnešní době. Srovnává také výhody a nevýhody přímé a zastupitelské demokracie. Dále se zabývá využitím referend v zemích Evropské unie. The thesis examines the application of the referendum as the mostly used instrument of a direct democracy. It describes historical development of direct democracies from the beginning and compares it with democracies nowadays.
