Referendum and its application in the Czech Republic

Anotácia:

Tato práce zkoumá využití referenda, jakožto nejvíce používaného nástroje přímé demokracie. Popisuje vývoj přímé demokracie od jejích počátků a srovnává ji s demokracií v dnešní době. Srovnává také výhody a nevýhody přímé a zastupitelské demokracie. Dále se zabývá využitím referend v zemích Evropské unie. Zaměřuje se zvláště na stav přímé demokracie v České republice na celostátní a místní úrovni. Popisuje využití referenda v minulosti a v současné době. Zabývá se problémy, které jsou s využíváním referenda spojené. Konečně zkoumá možný budoucí vývoj přímé demokracie v České republice.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the application of the referendum as the mostly used instrument of a direct democracy. It describes historical development of direct democracies from the beginning and compares it with democracies nowadays. It also compares the advantages and disadvantages of direct and representative democracies. Furthermore, it examines the application of the referendum in member states of European Union. It focuses especially on the situation of the direct democracy in the Czech Republic on national and local levels. It gives the characteristics of the application of the referendum in the past and today. The thesis deals with the problems connected with the usage of the referendum. Finally, it examines the possible further development of the direct democracy in the Czech Republic.
