Environmental Versions of Ethic Naturalism and Disputation on Them

Abstract:

Ekosystémy jsou lidskou činností čím dál výrazněji ovlivňovány, a to dnes do té míry, že mluvíme o environmentální krizi. Otázkou je, jak tuto krizi řešit. Jednou z možností by mohla být změna hodnotových postojů ve smyslu zapojení přírody do morálního vztahování se člověka ke světu, a to pomocí environmentálních etických teorií. Pro účely diplomové práce byly vybrány čtyři etické teorie, které lze považovat v daném oboru za stěžejní: Etika úcty k životu A. Schweitzera, Etika dobrovolné skromnosti H. Librové a K. Shrader-Frechett, Etika země A. Leopolda a Hlubinná ekologie A. Naesse. Každá z těchto teorií nabízí určitý způsob morálního vztahu člověka k přírodě, který lze přibližně vyčíst již ze samotného názvu teorie. Cílem diplomové práce je tyto teorie představit, stručně okomentovat, a pokusit se zhodnotit pojetí dobrého, jak ho představují autoři jednotlivých teorií. Například Schweitzer tvrdí: „Dobré je život uchovávat, zlé je život ničit a omezovat“, zatímco Leopold tvrdí: „Určitá věc je správná, když směřuje k zachování celistvosti, stability a krásy biotického společenství“. Představitel etického intuitivizmu G. E. Moore však poukázal na skutečnost, že dobré je jednoduchou vlastností plně postižitelnou výhradně naší intuicí. Dle Moora tedy není dobré ani uchování života, ani uchování biotického společenství - dobré je prostě dobré, a jeho definice jinou vlastností je pak naturalistickým chybným závěrem. Řešení otázek analytické etiky sice neodpovídá na otázku jak žít v environmentální krizi, avšak poukazuje na důležitou skutečnost, že v každé etické argumentaci musí být obsaženy hodnotové předpoklady. A jejich ujasnění je v environmentálních etických diskuzích obzvláště důležité.

Abstract:

Human activities have changed the ecosystems more and more, thus we can talk about the environmental crisis today. However, the question is how to solve this issue. One of the reasons could be to turn our value attitude in the sense of involvement the nature to our ethic relationship towards the universe, through the mediation by environmental ethic theories. For the purpose of this diploma thesis, four such theories were chosen: Reverence for life ethics by A. Schweitzer, Voluntary simplicity ethics both by H. Librová and K. Shrader-Frechett, Land ethics by A. Leopold, and Deep ecology by A. Naess. These theories may be considered to be fundamental in the field of environmental ethics. The factual way how to be in moral relation to the nature according to these theories can be roughly seen from the name of the theory. Goal of the diploma thesis is to introduce and shortly characterize these theories, and try to evaluate the conception of good, how it is presented by the authors. For example Schweitzer claims: „Good is to preserve the life, bad is to destroy and restrict it“, meanwhile Leopold claims: „Certain thing is good if it converge to the preservation of the integrity, stability and beauty of the biotic community“. Nevertheless, representative of the ethical intuitivism G. E. Moore have shown the fact that good is a simple quality that is wholly apprehensible only by our intuition. Thus, according to the Moore, good is neither to perceive the life nor to perceive the biotic community, but good is solely good. And definition of the good by another property is the naturalistic fallacy. Nevertheless, solving the analytical ethics questions does not answer to the question how to live in the environmental crisis, but point out to the fact there must be comprehend prescriptive premise in all ethic discussions. And their clarification is really important in the environmental ethic discussions.
