Audience Participation during The Great Dionysia

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá diváctvím dramatického agónu náboženské slavnosti Velkých Dionýsií. V práci ukazuji, že publikum události nebylo homogenní, statické a pasivní, jak se někdy v literatuře implicitně či explicitně předpokládá. Raději přemýšlím nad participací diváků na této události jako do různé míry aktivní a aktivizovanou a ukazuji důvody této aktivizovanosti, jako je příslušnost k sociální skupině, určitá funkce v události či vlastní performativní zkušenost, agonistická povaha události a vzbuzení zájmu o průběh představení na základě jeho estetických i mimoestetických parametrů.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the dramatic contest of the religious festival of the Great Dionysia. In this text, I´m showing the fact that the audience of these events was not homogenous, static and passive, as it is sometimes implicitly or explicitly presented in scholarly literature. I rather think about participation of the members of the audience in this event as more or less active and actualized, and I´m presenting the reasons for this activation, such as being part of a particular social class, having a role or a performative experience in the festival, the agonistic aspect of the event, and interest of the people in the audience in the performances thanks to their aesthetic and nonaesthetic qualities.
