The Late Neolithic Pottery from the Khabur Basin during the second half of 7th millennium: evidence from the Khabur Basin Project

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce se zaměřuje na nálezy keramických střepů z druhé poloviny 7. tisíciletí, které byly nashromážděny v rámci projektu Yale Khabur Basin Survey mezi lety 1984 až 2001 v oblasti povodí řeky Chábur v severovýchodní Sýrii. V práci jsou uvedeny nejdůležitější lokality s nálezy keramiky z období Pre-Proto-Hassuna, Proto-Hassuna/Pre-Halaf a Hassuna/Proto-Halaf, které jsou porovnávány s keramickým materiálem z KBP a které tak pomáhají dotvářet obraz pro dané období v oblasti severovýchodní Sýrie. Mezi zde uvedená lokality patří, mimo jiné, také výzkum Masarykovy univerzity konané od roku 2005 do roku 2010 na pozdně neolitické lokalitě Tell Arbid Abyad na Horním Cháburu, dále také Tell Seker al-Aheimar, Tell Kashkashok II, Tell Khazna II, Tell Boueid II, Tell Halaf, Tell Chagar Bazar a několik dalších systematicky či povrchově zkoumaných lokalit v této oblasti. Cílem práce je analyzovat více než čtyři sta střepů z druhé poloviny 7. tisíciletí, které byly nalezeny v rámci daného projektu a přiblížit jejich vlastnosti a doplnit tak další kus skládačky o výskytu nejstarších keramických nádob v oblasti dnešní severovýchodní Sýrie. Za tímto účelem byla vytvořena databáze a katalog, které by měly sloužit k lepší orientaci a analyzování jednotlivých střepů. Dokumentace zahrnuje podrobnou databázi s popisem fyzických, technologických a morfologických charakteristik, včetně fotografií a nákresů jednotlivých střepů. Tento nejstarší keramický materiál z KBP je zdokumentován, popsán a porovnán s materiálem z Tell Arbid Abyadu a ostatními lokalitami zkoumanými v údolí Cháburu za účelem dosažení přesnějšího určení typů keramiky a jejich možné datace.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on the second half of the 7th millennium of the Late Neolithic in the Khabur Basin in northeastern Syria and the presentation of the oldest potsherds found during the Yale Khabur Basin Survey Project (KBP) held since 1984 to 2001. There are discussed also major sites with the findings of Pre-Proto-Hassuna, Proto-Hassuna/Pre-Halaf and Hassuna/Proto-Halaf pottery to compare the ceramic material from the KBP with these sites and to fulfill the picture of a situation in the Khabur region in the 7th millennium BC. The sites included here represents, among others, research of the Masaryk University at the Late Neolithic site of Tell Arbid Abyad (2005-2010), further Tell Seker al-Aheimar, Tell Kashkashok II, Tell Khazna II, Tell Boueid II, Tell Halaf, Tell Chagar Bazar and several other ones excavated or surveyed in this area. The aim of the thesis is to analyze more than four hundred sherds from the second half of the 7th millennium found within the KBP, bring them closer to the next piece of the puzzle about the occurrence of the oldest ceramic vessels in the area of today northeastern Syria. For this purpose, a database and catalogue have been created which should serve to better orientation and analysis of individual sherds. The documentation includes description of physical, technological and morphological characteristics, as well as photos and drawings of individual sherds. This oldest ceramic material from the KBP is documented, described and compared with those from Tell Arbid Abyad and other sites excavated in the Khabur valley and beyond to achieve more accurate determination of ware types and their possible datation.
