Stock price development during the COVID-19 pandemic: A comparison of sectoral and corporate characteristics in the stock markets

Abstract:

Pandemie COVID-19 a její dopad na globální ekonomiku a finanční trhy poskytují příležitost pro zkoumání rozdílů v reakcích amerických a evropských akciových trhů. Cílem této práce je na základě provedené rešerše porovnat vývoj akcií nejvíce obchodovaných firem ve vybraných odvětvích s ohledem na klíčové faktory ovlivňující tento vývoj. V rámci studie je kladen důraz zejména na sektory zdravotnictví, technologií a cestovního ruchu, jelikož tvoří zásadní podíl ekonomik obou regionů. Metodika práce zahrnuje použití segmentace v podobě shlukové analýzy, vícenásobnou regresi a analýzu časových řad za roky 2018-2023. Cílem je identifikovat odlišné shluky společností v rámci vybraných sektorů a vyhodnotit hlavní faktory, které ovlivňovaly vývoj jejich cenových změn. Výsledky práce odhalily silnější odolnost zdravotnického a technologického sektoru vůči negativním dopadům pandemie. Největším problémům čelil sektor cestovního ruchu. Analýza časových řad potvrdila kointegrační vztah mezi americkými a evropskými akciovými indexy a faktory technologického odvětví spolu s faktorem amerického regionu měly na výkonnost firem největší vliv. Závěry této studie vyzdvihují důležitost diverzifikace rizika na akciových trzích. Výsledky mohou současně poskytnout užitečné informace pro investory či tržní analytiky, kteří usilují o hlubší porozumění dynamiky akciových trhů během krizových situací.

Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the global economy and financial markets provide an opportunity to examine the differences in the responses of US and European stock markets. The aim of this paper is to compare the stock performance of the most traded companies in selected sectors with respect to the key factors influencing this performance, based on the conducted research. In particular, the focus of the study is on the healthcare, technology and tourism sectors, as they constitute a major share of the economies of both regions. The methodology of the paper involves the use of segmentation in the form of cluster analysis, multiple regression and time series analysis for the years 2018-2023. The aim is to identify distinct clusters of companies within the selected sectors and evaluate the key factors that have influenced their price changes. The results of the work revealed a stronger resilience of the healthcare and technology sectors to the negative impacts of the pandemic. The tourism sector faced the greatest challenges. The time series analysis confirmed the cointegration relationship between the US and European stock indices and the technology sector factors along with the US region factor had the greatest impact on firm performance. The findings of this study highlight the importance of risk diversification in equity markets. At the same time, the results may provide useful information for investors or market analysts seeking a deeper understanding of stock market dynamics during crisis situations.
