Political development of the South Caucasus in 1917-1922

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem politického vývoje Jižního Kavkazu mezi lety 1917-1922. Skládá se z pěti kapitol, které jsou v chronologické návaznosti, a je spojena i s historickým vývojem od začlenění jihokavkazských států pod ruskou správu. První kapitola podrobně popisuje carské impérium na počátku 20. století, jehož součástí byly i jihokavkazské národy. Je důležité pochopit politickou transformaci Ruska, neboť Rusko bylo nejdůležitějším externím aktérem pro tuto studii. Následující kapitola popisuje vývoj nezávislosti a vznik samostatných jihokavkazských republik v roce 1918. Na poli vnějších aktérů se nesetkáváme pouze s Ruskem, ale svou roli v tamním regionu měly rovněž Osmanská říše, Persie, Velká Británie a Německo, o čemž se můžeme dočíst ve čtvrté kapitole. Předposlední kapitola pojednává o inkorporaci jihokavkazských republik do Sovětského svazu a nastolení politiky sovětizace, která trvala až do rozpadu Sovětského svazu v roce 1991. Poslední kapitola nám umožňuje nahlédnout na reflexi současných států Jižního Kavkazu, které jsou stále úzce propojeny s politickým vývojem mezi lety 1917-1922.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis is focused on the topic of political development in the South Caucasus between the years 1917 and 1922. It is composed of five chapters, which are arranged chronologically and is also connected with the historical development since the integration of the South Caucasus states under Russian administration. The first chapter describes in detail the Russian Empire in the beginning of the 20th century, which included the nations of the South Caucasus. It is important to understand Russian political transformation, as Russia was the most important external actor in the context of this thesis. The following chapter describes the development of sovereignty and the origin of independent South Caucasus republics in 1918. In terms of external actors, the Ottoman Empire, Persia, Great Britain and Germany is also considered in the region, as we can learn about it in the fourth chapter. The penultimate chapter deals with the incorporation of the South Caucasus republics in to the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Sovietization policy, which lasted until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The last chapter examined the reflection upon the current republics of South Caucasus, which is still connected to the political developement between the years of 1917-1922.
