The care of a woman and a newborn at Virginia Hospital Center in the USA

Abstract:

Tato teoretická práce vychází především z vlastního pozorování a zkušeností a zabývá se péčí o ženu a novorozence v nemocnici Virginia Hospital Center (dále jen VHC) v americkém státě Virgínie. Zaobírá se péčí o ženu v těhotenství, při porodu a po porodu a péčí o fyziologického a patologického novorozence. Cílem práce je přiblížit hmotné vybavení, postupy a praktiky v této nemocnici očima dětské sestry pracující na jednotce intenzivní péče pro novorozence. Dále by práce měla přiblížit profesi zdravotních sester a porodních asistentek ve Virgínii včetně vzdělání, registrace, dalšího vzdělávání a pravomocí v praxi a alespoň okrajově přiblížit systém zdravotní péče a pojištění v USA, mateřskou dovolenou a kulturní diverzitu americké populace. V diskuzi a v závěru vyjadřuji své vlastní postoje a srovnání péče ve Spojených státech, respektive ve VHC, s péčí v České republice, respektive ve Fakultní nemocnici Brno.

Abstract:

This theoretical thesis is based mainly on my own assessment and experience and describes the care of women and newborns at Virginia Hospital Center (further VHC) in Virginia, USA. It descibes the care of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum period and the care of a physiologic and high risk newborn. The main goal of this thesis is to show the layout and practices at this hospital through the eyes of a pediatric nurse working at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Further goal of this work is to describe Registered Nurses´and Midwifes´profession in Virginia including education, registration, further education, and competencies. The thesis also touches the healthcare system and insurance in the United States, maternity leave, and cultural diversity of the american population. In the discussion and the conclusion I present my own views and comparissons of the care in the US and VHC to the care in the Czech Republic and Fakultni nemocnice Brno respectively.
