Parallax as Perspective: Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom in James Joyce's Ulysses

Abstract:

V souvislosti s Joyceovým perspektivismem, zejména tím, který je vykreslen prostřednictvím fenoménu paralaxy, zkoumám, do jaké míry je paralaktické čtení Joyceových motivů v Odysseovi použitelné pro dosažení pocitu binokulárního vnímání. Toto paralaktické vyprávění je zkoumáno zejména ve třech hlavních rovinách: Jako abstraktní motiv Joyceova syntetického vidění v Odyssei (Struktura Odysseje); jako motiv postavy zejména v případě vnímání reality Leopolda Blooma a konečně, což je nejdůležitější, je analyzováno a interpretováno setkání Štěpána a Blooma na Ithace na základě předpokladu, že čtenáři Odysseje poskytuje Joyceův konečný cíl: hloubkové vnímání, které získáváme z perspektivního vidění světa.

Abstract:

In relation to Joyce’s perspectivism, particularly the one rendered through the phenomenon of parallax, I investigate the extent to which a parallactic reading of Joyce’s motives in Ulysses is applicable to achieving a sense of depth perception. This parallactic narrative is particularly studied on three main levels: As an abstract motif of Joyce’s synthetic vision in Ulysses (Structure of Ulysses); as a character motif particularly in the case of Leopold Bloom’s perception of reality, and finally and most significantly, the meeting of Stephen and Bloom in Ithaca is analysed and interpreted based on the assumption that it provides the reader of Ulysses with Joyce’s ultimate purpose: depth-perception we gain from a perspectival worldview.
