British and American English in Situational Comedies

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce na téma “British and American English in situational comedies” se skládá z teoretické části., jež popisuje období, ve kterém se podoba britské a americké angličtiny postupně začala lišit. Poté se zabývá oblastmi, ve kterých se varianty rozcházejí. Cílem této části je vymezení rozdílů mezi britskou a americkou angličtinou, podložených historickými fakty. Ty odhalí, která jazyková varianta se více podobá té původní, „předkoloniální“ angličtině, a která byla naopak modifikována. V praktické části dochází k porovnání britského a amerického jazyka za pomoci tzv. komparativní metody, a to na základě britského sitcomu zvaného Kancl a amerického sitcomu Teorie velkého třesku. Pomocí analýzy jazyka užívaného v jednotlivých situačních komediích se prokáže, zda hypotéza uvedená v předchozí části odpovídá současné formě obou jazykových variant, dále ve kterých oblastech jsou rozdíly nejmarkantnější a ve kterých se naopak v praxi ukázaly jako nepatrné.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis “British and American English in situational comedies” consists of the theoretical part, which gives information about gradual separation of American English from its British counterpart. Furthermore, it describes in what fields the two variations differ. The goal of this part is to highlight their dissimilarities as well as base them on the historical background and ascertain which variation had a tendency to preserve its form. In the practical part, there is used a comparative method in order to make a comparison of the two variations, using the British sitcom The Office and the American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. By studying the language used in the sitcoms, it can be observed whether the hypothesis corresponds with contemporary form of British and American English, which differences are the most noticeable and which, by contrast, do not excessively manifest themselves.
