Abstract:

Tato doktorská práce se věnuje evoluční dynamice systému parazit-hostitel. K matematickému popisu a studiu evoluční dynamiky zde používáme teoretických výsledků adaptivní dynamiky. Doktorská práce je rozdělena do pěti kapitol. V první kapitole je uveden souhrn základních matematických pojmů nutných pro modelování dynamiky infekčních nemocí včetně popisu adaptivní dynamiky. Další kapitoly jsou založeny na jednotlivých vědeckých článcích, z nichž první tři se zabývají evoluční dynamikou vertikálně přenosných infekcí u hmyzu. Čtvrtý článek přispívá k teorii evoluce černého kašle u lidí. První článek vyšetřuje evoluci přenosových cest obecné infekce v obecné populaci hmyzu. Potvrzuje se pozorování, že parazité nezvyšující zdatnost hostitele a s možností sexuálního nebo vertikálního přenosu upřednostňují čistě sexuální přenos nebo kombinaci sexuálního a vertikálního přenosu. Druhý článek se zaměřuje na studium evoluce bakterií zabíjejících infikovaná samčí embrya u hmyzu. Ukazuje se, že postačující podmínkou pro vznik a dlouhodobou persistenci těchto bakterií v hostitelské populaci je přítomnost horizontálního přenosu. Ve třetím článku studujeme možnost využití bakterií zabíjejících infikovaná samčí embrya při kontrole hmyzích škůdců. Ukazujeme, že přítomnost těchto bakterií významně zvyšuje účinnost další metody kontroly škůdců, konkrétně metody vypouštění sterilních samců. Poslední článek zkoumá evoluci virulence a obrany parazita před imunitou hostitele vyvolanou očkováním ve věkově strukturované populaci. Zjišťujeme, že věkově specifický přenos neovlivňuje evoluci virulence parazita. Jestliže si parazit navíc vyvine vůči očkování odolnost, stává se méně virulentním než parazit, který tuto odolnost nemá.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis deals with evolutionary dynamics of host-parasite systems. We use techniques of adaptive dynamics theory to describe and study evolutionary processes mathematically. This thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter, we briefly describe the mathematics behind infectious diseases modeling, including the adaptive dynamics. Other chapters are based on individual research articles. Two of these articles explore evolutionary dynamics of maternally inherited infections in insects, one aims to assess usefulness of reproductive parasites in pest control and one extends our knowledge of evolutionary behaviour of pertussis-causing bacteria in humans. In the first article, we investigate the evolution of transmission routes of a general infection in a general insect population. We assume the parasites can be transmitted sexually or vertically, and confirm empirical observations on non-beneficial parasites to be predominantly sexually transmitted or to be transmitted via a mixture of sexual and parental routes. In the second article, we focus on the evolution of male-killing ability in bacteria attacking insects. We discover that a sufficient condition for the emergence and maintenance of male-killing in the host-parasite system over evolutionary time is the presence of at least some horizontal transmission of the bacteria. In the third article, we investigate potential use of male-killing bacteria as agents of insect pest control. We demonstrate that introduction of these bacteria significantly enhances the effectiveness of another pest control method, the sterile insect technique. The last article studies the evolution of virulence and immune evasion of the pertussis infection in an age-structured population. We show that age-specific transmission of the parasite has no impact on the evolution of its virulence. In addition, if a parasite strain evolves resistance to vaccine, it can become less virulent than a non-resistant strains.
