Automatic transcription of typewritten documents written in the Czech language

Abstract:

V posledních pěti letech došlo k výraznému nárůstu zájmu odborníků v oblasti digitálních humanitních věd o nové metody přepisu dokumentů a zpřístupňování historického písemného dědictví pomocí umělé inteligence. Práce stručně popisuje stav poznání transkripčních nástrojů se zaměřením na současný stav inovativní platformy Transkribus. Diplomová práce se věnuje specifickému výzkumnému problému transkripce dokumentů, které jsou psány na psacím stroji. V českých archivech se nachází a uchovává velké množství dokumentů, které jsou psány na psacích strojích, především z konce 19. až 20. století. Jejich počet není znám, protože archivy nezaznamenávají údaj o strojopisu v deskriptivních metadatech, avšak jde odhadem o 40-80 % archivního materiálu. Pro automatickou transkripci dosud neexistuje spolehlivý nástroj. Cílem práce je výzkum a experimenty, zaměřené na tvorbu specifických modelů pomocí umělé inteligence v platformě Transkribus, které umožní efektivněji transkribovat české strojem psané dokumenty.

Abstract:

Over the past five years, there has been a significant increase in interest among digital humanities professionals in new methods of transcribing documents and making historical written heritage accessible using artificial intelligence. The thesis briefly describes the state of knowledge of transcription tools with a focus on the current state of the innovative Transkribus platform. The diploma thesis deals with a specific research problem of transcription of documents that are written on a typewriter. Czech archives contain and preserve a large number of typewritten documents, mainly from the end of the 19th and 20th centuries. Their number is unknown, because the archives don´t record typescript data in the descriptive metadata, but it´s estimated to be 40-80 % of the archival material. There is no reliable tool for automatic transcription yet. The goal of the thesis is research and experiments, focused on the creation of specific models with using artificial intelligence in the Transkribus platform, which will enable more efficient transcribing of Czech typewritten documents.
