Refusal of the evolution theory. Case study of the christian fundamentalists in USA

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the long-term conflict between the proponents of creationism among Christian Fundamentalists and the evolutionary biologists. It is divided into three main sections. After short introduction to the key terms, I offer an anthropological analysis of the conflict, referring to the theories of Karen Armstrong, Freilich, Mary Douglas and Riesenbrodt. The following chapter tries to answer the question about the sources of deep emotional concerns of people opposing the theory of evolution. It lies in the fear of negative implications belief in evolution might bring to moral norms of the society and reluctance to change one´s worldview, which would have to follow after accepting the theory of evolution. The fear of moral decay stems from the historical experience of the impacts evolution incorporated into political thought had in Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia in the first half of the 20th Century. It overlaps with distrust towards non-christian immigrants, whose unorthodox moral values could outweigh the Christian ones in the process of survival of the fittest. The last chapter looks at the relationship between creation science and mainstream evolutionary biology. There, I ask where is the boundary between religion and science and wether it is always possible to distinguish between them.

Abstract:

Táto práca pojednáva o dlhotrvajúcom rozpore medzi zástancami kreacionizmu z radov kresťanských fundamentalistov a evolučnými biológmi. Je rozdelená na tri hlavné časti. Po krátkom predstavení kľúčových pojmov sa venuje antropologickej analýze príčin konfliktu, pri čom sa odvolávam na teóriu Karen Armstrong, Freilicha, Mery Douglas a Riesenbrodta. Na otázku príčiny silných emócií v debate odpovedá nasledujúca kapitola, ktorá ich vidí v obave o negatívny dopad viery v evolúciu na morálne normy spoločnosti a v strachu z teologických implikácií, ktoré by vyžadovali radikálnu zmenu svetonázoru, ktorej sa fundamentalisti obávajú. Má pôvod v empirickej skúsenosti spojenej s dôsledkami integrácie evolučného myslenia do politiky nacistického Nemecka a socialistického Ruska v prvej polovici dvadsiateho storočia. Prelína sa s nedôverou voči nekresťanským imigrantom v USA, neortodoxná morálka ktorých by mohla v procese prežitia silnejšieho vytlačiť tradičné hodnoty. V poslednej časti práce sledujem vzťah medzi vedou o stvorení a prevládajúcim vedeckým diskurzom. Nastoľujem otázku, kde sa začína veda a končí viera.
