Puns and Their Translation: Czech Translation of Selected Puns in Terry Pratchett

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore the possibility of translating puns, in both theory and practice. Firstly a thorough examination of the term ?pun? is necessary. The history of punning, including the perceptions of critics, will be outlined, the origin of the word will be briefly covered, differing definitions of ?pun? will be compared, and the classification subtypes of a pun will be examined. The untranslatability of puns is rejected by treating them as textual phenomena and strategies which enable the translation of puns are described In the theoretical part the author, his work and the translator are introduced. In the analytical part of the thesis a concrete set of puns from the works of Terry Pratchett are chosen, which are divided into subcategories in the theoretical part, and we observe how Jan Kantůrek works with the translation and what translational strategies he uses.

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je sledovat možnosti překladu slovních hříček, anglicky ?puns?, v teorii a praxi. V první části práce se proto musíme podrobně seznámit s pojmem slovní hříčka. Zabýváme se stručnou historií takových hříček, včetně toho jak byly přijímány kritiky, krátce zmiňujeme původ výrazu pun, porovnáváme různé definice slovní hříčky a zabýváme se jejími kategoriemi. Zamítáme názor, že slovní hříčka je nepřeložitelná tím, že chápeme slovní hříčku jako součást textu. Dále se snažíme popsat strategie použitelné při překládání slovních hříček. V teoretické části práce nakonec krátce představíme autora, dílo a jeho překladatele. V analytické části práce potom budeme na vybraných slovních hříčkách z díla Terryho Pratchetta, rozdělených podle kategirií prezentovaných v teoretické části, pozorovat, jak Jan Kantůrek zachází s jejich překladem a jaké strategie přitom používá.
