Accio data! The analysis of Harry Potter fan fictions using tags and metadata

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je případovou studií produkce fandomu Harryho Pottera na platformě Archive of Our Own. Cílem studie je provést prvotní exploraci a popsat základní charakteristiky korpusu fanfikcí. Teoretickým východiskem práce je chápání fanouškovství jako specifické podoby populární a participativní kultury. Mediální fanoušci jsou aktivním publikem, které je schopno následovaný text kriticky číst a utvářet vlastní interpretace a subverse. Kontextuální část práce vysvětluje koncept folksonomie, která je jedním z principů fungování fanouškovských shromaždišť. Dále blíže představuje úložiště Archive of Our Own, odkud zkoumaná díla pochází. Navazující metodologická část vysvětluje design studie, výběr obsahové analýzy, frekvenční analýzy a hledání souvýskytů jakožto výzkumných technik. Výstupem analýzy je report zjištění podpořený vizualizacemi. Následná diskuse poté shrnuje nejzásadnější poznatky, zasazuje je do kontextu, porovnává s existujícími studiemi a navrhuje cesty pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

This thesis presents a case study of the Harry Potter fandom production on the Archive of Our Own platform. The aim of the study is to conduct an initial exploration and describe main characteristics of the fan fiction corpus. The theoretical foundation of the thesis is based on approaching media fans as active audiences who are able to critically decode the source text and form their own interpretations and subversions. The contextual part of the thesis explains the concept of folksonomy, which is one of the principles of fannish online spaces functioning. It further introduces the Archive of Our Own repository, from where the works in question originated. The subsequent methodology section explains the study design, choices of content analysis, frequency analysis and co-occurrence search as research techniques. The output of the analysis is a report of the findings supported by visualizations. The subsequent discussion then summarizes the most relevant findings, places them in context, compares them with existing studies and suggests directions for further research.
