The Position of Roma Women in the Family and Community

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Postavení romských žen v rodině a komunitě“ předkládá obraz současné romské ženy a srovnává ho s obrazem romské ženy tradiční. Teoretická část práce se nejprve zabývá změnami postavení ženy v historii lidstva, následně se shrnuje dějiny Romů a dějiny Romů v Českých zemích a vymezuje pojmy romská komunita a romská rodina. Následující kapitola popisuje tradiční postavení romské ženy od jejího narození, až po období stáří. Závěrečná kapitola teoretické části nás seznamuje s použitými výzkumnými metodami, tedy s kvalitativním výzkumem, narativním rozhovorem, otevřeným kódováním a technikou kontrastování. Praktická část se pokouší co nejpřesněji uchopit a vystihnout společné rysy současné romské ženy, problémy, se kterými se potýká a její vztah k romskému jazyk, tradicím a komunitě. Výzkum je realizován pomocí analýzy životních příběhů pěti romských žen. Výsledkem výzkumu je sedm kategorií a tři podkategorie, které zachycují společné rysy respondentek a klíčové body jejich životů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis “The Position of Roma Women in a Family and in a Community” depicts a status of a Roma woman nowadays and compares it with a picture of a traditional Roma woman. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with changes of a woman status in the history of mankind. Then it summarizes the history of Roma people as such and the history of Roma people in the Czech Republic. It also defines the terms a Roma community and a Roma family. The following chapter describes the traditional status of a Roma woman from birth till her old age. The last chapter of the theoretical part introduces the methods used in the research: a qualitative research, a narrative interview, on open coding and a contrastive technique. The practical part tries to depict as closely as possible the common features and attributes of a Roma woman, the problems she encounters and her relationship to Roma language, traditions and the community. The research is done by means of analyses of life stories of five Roma women. This research results in seven categories and three sub-categories, which depict the common features of the respondents and the key moments in their lives.
