Death and the hero: The role of death in helping the protagonist mature on the hero’s journey

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat, jak smrt - buď hlavního hrdiny, nebo někoho z jeho blízkých - pomáhá hrdinovi dozrát. Role smrti v procesu zrání hlavního hrdiny je analyzována ve třech románech pro mládež: Dárce od Lois Lowryové, Hvězdy nám nepřály od Johna Greena a Alex Woods vs vesmír od Gavina Extence. Práce je rozdělena do několika kapitol a pojednává o tom, jak tyto tři romány zobrazují smrt v knize ve vztahu k monomýtu hrdinovy cesty. První kapitola představuje literaturu pro dospívající jako žánr a zaměřuje se na specifické charakteristické prvky. Identifikuje roli, kterou romány tohoto žánru hrají v životě dospívajících čtenářů, a nastiňuje některá jejich stěžejní témata, přičemž závěr pojednává o tom, že se mladí čtenáři seznamují pomocí literatury se závažnými tématy, jakými je například smrt. Zároveň díky tomu získávají povědomí o těch tématech v bezpečném a dostatečně distancovaném prostředí. Druhá, třetí a čtvrtá kapitola představují podrobný rozbor tří výše zmíněných románů a zaměřují se v něm na korelaci mezi monomýtem hrdinovy cesty a tématem smrti. Konečným cílem práce je poskytnout srovnatelnou individuální analýzu, která by poukázala na podobnost vývoje hrdinů a příběhů o dospívání, zejména pokud jde o zdůraznění smrti jako katalyzátoru dospělosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explore how death—either of the main protagonist or someone they are close to—helps the protagonist mature. The role of death in the protagonist’s maturation process is analysed in three Young Adult novels, The Giver by Lois Lowry, The Fault in Our Stars by John Green, and The Universe Versus Alex Woods by Gavin Extence. The work is divided into several chapters and discusses how these three novels depict death in relation to the hero’s journey monomyth. The first chapter introduces Young Adult novels as a genre and focuses on specific elements that help characterise it. It identifies the role that novels in this genre play in the lives of their adolescent readers, and it outlines some of their most prominent themes, concluding with the notion that the manner in which Young Adult literature introduces its young readers to serious themes, including death, helps them gain awareness of them from a safer and more distanced environment. The second, third, and fourth chapters present a detailed analysis of the three abovementioned novels and focus this analysis on the correlation between the hero’s journey pattern and the theme of death. The ultimate aim is to provide a comparable individual analysis that would highlight the similarities between the protagonists’ development and coming-of-age stories, particularly in terms of emphasising death as a catalyst for maturity.
