OFF-Biennale Budapest as one of The Politically Engaged Artistic and Curatorial Practices in Contemporary Art

Abstract:

The thesis deals with OFF-Biennale Budapest, an international curatorial initiative that emerged out of the need to realize art projects independent of the support of the Hungarian national-conservative government. Founded in 2014, the institution rejects any support or cooperation with the Hungarian government and Hungarian public institutions. The theoretical part of the thesis will focus on the format of biennials in contemporary art, explaining concepts such as "biennalisation"; and placing special emphasis on art shows existing in the post-Soviet countries of Eastern and Central Europe. In the practical part, qualitative research will be conducted in the form of interviews with organizers and curators active in OFF-Biennale Budapest. The aim of the thesis is to trace what role this initiative plays in the Hungarian (and international) art scene. It examines whether the current setup of OFF-Biennale is a sustainable and effective form of independent cultural project and resistance to the Hungarian government.

Diplomová práce sleduje OFF-Biennále Budapešť - mezinárodní kurátorskou iniciativu, která vznikla z potřeby realizovat umělecké projekty nezávislé na podpoře maďarské ultrapravicové vlády. Instituce založená v roce 2014 odmítá jakoukoliv podporu či spolupráci s maďarskou vládou a maďarskými veřejnými institucemi. V teoretické části se práce zaměří na formát bienále v současném umění, vysvětleny budou pojmy jako je "bienalizace" a zvláštní důraz bude kladen na umělecké přehlídky existující v postsovětských zemích východní a střední Evropy. V praktické části bude proveden kvalitativní výzkum formou rozhovoru s hlavními aktéry - organizátory a kurátory současně působícími v OFF-Biennále Budapešť. Cílem práce je vysledovat, jakou roli tato iniciativa hraje na maďarské (potažmo mezinárodní) umělecké scéně a je-li její stávající nastaveni udržitelnou a účinnou formou nezávislého kulturního projektu a rezistence vůči maďarské vládě.
