Spatial analysis of the relationship between R&D expenditure and competitiveness in the high-tech sector at the regional level

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou vlivu výdajů na vědu a výzkum (V&V) na konkurenceschopnost v high-tech sektoru pro NUTS 2 regiony, a to za pomocí technik prostorové ekonometrie. V práci je rozebrán teoretický rámec regionální konkurenceschopnosti v high-tech sektoru a je uveden popis přístupů prostorové ekonometrie. Analýza byla provedena na vzorku 84 regionů zemí Německo, Česko, Polsko, Slovensko, Rakousko a Itálie pro rok 2018. Za použití testů prostorové autokorelace (Moranovo I, Gearyho C) byla ověřena přítomnost prostorové autokorelace a za pomocí modelů prostorové ekonometrie jako Spatial lag model, Spatial Durbin model či Spatial error model byl dokázán i statisticky významný pozitivní efekt výdajů na V&V na hodnotu HDP per capita a také i tzv. spillover efekt, jenž popisuje pozitivní vliv výdajů na V&V na hodnotu HDP per capita sousedních regionů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the impact of expenditure on research and development (R&D) on competitiveness in the high-tech sector for NUTS 2 regions, using spatial econometrics techniques. The theoretical framework of regional competitiveness in the high-tech sector is discussed and a description of spatial econometrics techniques is given. The analysis was performed on a sample of 84 regions of Germany, Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Italy for 2018. Using the spatial autocorrelation test (Moran's, Geary's C), the presence of spatial autocorrelation was verified, and using spatial econometrics models such as Spatial lag model, Spatial Durbin model, or Spatial error model was proved a statistically significant positive effect of R&D expenditure on GDP per capita and also the so-called spillover effect, which describes the positive effect of R&D expenditure on GDP per capita of neighboring regions.
