Economic factors and the popularity of the government

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, zda existuje vztah mezi popularitou vlády a stavem ekonomiky. Pro vlády Miloše Zemana, Vladimíra Špidly, druhou vládu Mirka Topolánka a vládu Petra Nečase byly sestaveny a ekonometricky testovány funkce popularity. Bylo zjištěno, že popularita skutečně závisí na stavu ekonomiky; u levicových vlád je hlavním faktorem nezaměstnanost, kdežto u pravicových vlád závisí popularita především na inflaci. Vedlejším úspěchem bylo potvrzení vnímání nezaměstnanosti a inflace dle logiky Phillipsovy křivky, a to u tří ze čtyř analyzovaných vlád. Mimo stav ekonomiky je pro Čechy zásadní také politická situace v zemi, především různé politické aféry a kauzy. Jejich vliv je natolik zásadní, že je možné prohlásit, že popularita vlády závisí hlavně na politickém dění, respektive na mediálním zpracování politického dění. Proto by bylo vhodné zamezit významnějšímu propojení politiků a médií, které je v současné době na neúnosné míře.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to find a relation between the popularity of a Czech government and the state of the national economy. Popularity functions were established and econometrically tested for governments led by Prime ministers Zeman, Špidla, Topolánek and Nečas. It was discovered that the popularity indeed depends on the state of national economy; in case of left oriented governments the main factor is unemployment while in the case of right oriented governments the main factor is inflation. It was also proven, beside the main goal, that the Phillips curve theorem is valid in conditions of the Czech Republic. Besides the economic factors, political factors as corruption affairs and similar were proven to affect popularity of the government even more than the economic factors. Therefore it is essential to make sure that media is really independent from politicians, which in the czech reality is far from the truth.
