The Scapegoat as the Carrier of Sins: The Duality of Divinity in Cormac McCarthy's \kur{Child of God}and \kur{Outer Dark}

Abstract:

This Bachelor's thesis analyzes the work and the influence of the significant contemporary American novelist, Cormac McCarthy, one of the major representatives of the literature of the American South. The first part of this paper is focused on his life, career and literary development, as well as the main parameters of his work. The objective is to examine McCarthy's literary predecessors and his worldviews. He has been characterized as a philosophical author with religious feelings in the unorthodox sense. Finally, the primary attention of the thesis is paid to the main protagonists of the McCarthy's early novels Child of God and Outer Dark, scrutinizing "the Duality of Divinity." Conclusion of this thesis demonstrates the evidence that the main protagonists bear the typical features of the symbolic sacrifice of a human victim and represent the Scapegoat as the Carrier of Sins.

Abstract:

Předmětem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat dílo a vliv významného současného amerického romanopisce Cormaca McCarthyho, jednoho z hlavních představitelů americké jižanské literatury. První část práce je soustředěna na jeho život, kariéru, literární vývoj a characteristiku jeho děl. Cílem je probádat jeho literární předchůdce a jeho vlastní pohled na svět. Je označován za filosofického autora s náboženským cítěním v neortodoxním smyslu slova. Prvotní pozornost práce je věnována hlavním protagonistům McCarthyho raných románů Dítě boží a Vnější tma, zkoumající "Dualitu božství." Závěr práce se snaží prokázat skutečnost, že hlavní protagonisté nesou typické znaky symbolické lidské oběti a reprezentují tak Obětního beránka jako nositele hříchů ostatních.
