Life satisfaction and functioning of the families with a physically handicapped child

Abstract:

Název práce zní životní spokojenost a fungování rodin s tělesně postiženým dítětem. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí, teoretické a výzkumné, každá z nich obsahuje po pěti kapitolách. Teoretická část zahrnuje vysvětlení pojmu životní spokojenost a popis faktorů životní spokojenost ovlivňujících, charakteristiku života rodin s tělesně postiženým dítětem, informace o možnostech a podmínkách integrace tělesně postiženého dítěte do běžné školy, seznámení se s termínem rodinné fungování a s charakteristikami rodin funkčních a dysfunkčních či vhled do problematiky rodinného stresu a jeho zvládání a s tímto související rodinné resilience. Výzkum probíhal ve dvou fázích: v první fázi jsme naši pozornost zaměřili na rodiny dětí neintegrovaných, ve druhé fázi na rodiny dětí integrovaných. U obou typů rodin jsme zjišťovali míru jejich fungování, rodinné hardiness a míru životní spokojenosti rodičů, výsledky v obou typech rodin jsme poté navzájem porovnávali. Mimo to nás zajímal také způsob života těchto rodin a zkušenosti s integrací jejich tělesně postiženého dítěte do běžné školy.Ve výzkumu byl důraz kladen na kvalitativní metodologii, tedy rozhovory, pozorování a návštěvy rodin, z kvantitativních metod byla použita Škála rodinného prostředí, Dotazník životní spokojenosti a Family Hardiness Index. Zjistili jsme, že životní spokojenost rodičů tělesně postiženého dítěte je srovnatelná se spokojeností věkově odpovídající populace a rovněž fungování těchto rodin můžeme celkově označit za zdravé. Předpokládáme však, že tyto rodiny jsou oproti ostatním méně odolné. Při porovnání rodin dětí neintegrovaných a integrovaných jsme konstatovali, že mírně odolnější a zdravěji fungující jsou rodiny dětí integrovaných. Na závěr máme za potřebné zdůraznit, že ačkoli je život rodiče tělesně postiženého dítěte velice náročný a vyčerpávající, dle referencí některých rodičů je současně životem šťastným a naplněným pocitem smysluplnosti.

Abstract:

The title of this thesis is the life satisfaction and functioning of the families with a physically handicapped child. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and exploratory, both in five chapters. The theoretical part concerns explanation of the term life satisfaction and description of the factors, which influence life satisfaction; characteristic of life of the families with a physically handicapped child; information about possibilities and requirements of integration a physically handicapped child; introduction of the term family functioning and features of the functional and dysfunctional families; look into the topic of family stress and its coping and into the related area of family resilience. The research took place in two phases: in the first phase we focused on families with non-integrated children, in the second phase on families with integrated children. By both types of these families we discovered the degrese of their functioning, family hardiness and life satisfaction of the parents, we compared then the results between these two types of the families. Besides we were interested in the style of life of these families and experiences with integration their physically handicapped child into the common school. In the research the emphasis was put on a qualitative methodology, namely on interviews, observations and visits, from the quantitative methods we used the Family Environment Scale, the Questionnaire of Life satisfaction and the Family Hardiness Index. We discovered that the life satisfaction of the parents is comparable with the age corresponding population. Functioning of these families is comparable with their satisfaction and it is overall healthy. However, we suppose that these families are less resilient. By the comparison of the families with non-integrated children and integrated children we stated, that slightly more resilient and better functional are the families with integrated chilren. There must be concluded, that in spite of the demanding and exhausting nature of the life of a parent of the physically handicapped child, this life can be, in accordance with statements of some parents, at the same time happy and meaningful.
