Tooth Size Patterns in Historical Populations

Abstract:

Tato práce si kladla za cíl popsat velikostní vzorce lidského chrupu deseti archeologických vzorků se zaměřením na vztah mezi velikostí zubů a odhadovaným věkem při úmrtí. Byly analyzovány bukolingvální a meziodistální rozměry zubů u 130 jedinců rozdělených do tří věkových skupin. K posouzení dimorfismu v rámci věkové skupiny byly použity absolutní profilové vzorce indexu velikosti pohlavního dimorfismu, rozdíl mezi průměrnými hodnotami pro muže a ženy a velikost efektu pohlavního dimorfismu pro každou věkovou skupinu. K posouzení rozdílů ve velikosti zubů mezi věkovými skupinami byly použity relativní profilové vzorce využívající Z skóre. Smíšený model artANOVA byl použit k testování statistické významnosti rozdílů ve velikosti zubů mezi věkovými skupinami. Nejvíce dimorfní zub obecně pozorovaný v tomto vzorku byl špičák. Největší zuby mezi ženami měly ženy ze skupiny mladých jedinců. U mužských velikostních vzorců nelze pozorovat žádný jasný trend. Ze tří věkových skupin vykazovala skupina mladých jedinců nejmenší stupeň sexuálního dimorfismu. Podle zjištění této práce existují rozdíly ve velikosti zubů mezi předčasně zemřelými subadulty a dospělými, které mohou být příznakem prenatálního a časně postnatálního environmentálního stresu.

Abstract:

This thesis aimed to describe the patterns of the human dentition of ten archaeological samples, with a focus on the relationship between tooth size and estimated age at death. Bucco-lingual and mesio-distal tooth dimensions of 130 individuals divided into three age groups were analysed. Absolute profile patterns of the Sexual size dimorphism index, the difference between male and female mean, and effect size were used to assess the dimorphism within each age group. Relative profile patterns employing Z-scores were used to assess the tooth size differences between age groups. Mixed effects artANOVA was employed to test for the statistical significance of tooth size differences between the age groups. The most dimorphic tooth generally observed in this sample was the canine. The females of the Young group had the largest teeth among the females. No clear trend can be observed in the male patterns. Out of the three age groups, the Young group exhibited the smallest degree of sexual dimorphism. According to this thesis, there are variations in tooth size between prematurely deceased subadults and adults, which may be a symptom of prenatal and early postnatal environmental stress.
