Overseas expansion of England: from Cabot to the Declaration of Independence

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce je věnována dějinám tzv. prvního britského impéria se zaměřením na anglickou kolonizaci Severní Ameriky. Cílem studie je ucelená reflexe této fáze a kategorie britských dějin od jejích prvopočátků za Jindřicha VII. z tudorovské dynastie až po vydání Deklarace nezávislosti Spojených států amerických. Zhodnoceny jsou jak počáteční cesty anglických objevitelů v čele s Johnem a Sebastianem Cabotovými či éra alžbětinských korzárů a pirátů, tak počátky osidlování amerického kontinentu Angličany s poukazem na vnitřní situaci nově vznikajících osad. Součástí práce je též připomenutí vývoje v mateřské zemi a jejích komplikovaných vztahů s dalšími evropskými kolonizátory, jež mnohdy končily ozbrojenými střety, zasahujícími i do oblasti zámoří. Studie je zakončena reflexí americké války za nezávislost, vedoucí k rozpadu prvního britského impéria a vzniku nové velmoci, Spojených států amerických.

Abstract:

This thesis is dedicated to the history of the so called First British Empire, with the focus on English colonization of the North America. The goal of the study is complex reflection of this phase of British history from its beginnings during the times of Henry VII from the Tudor dynasty to the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America. There are reflected both the journeys of English explorer led by John and Sebastian Cabots and the times of Elisabethians corsairs and pirates, and the beginnings of the English settlement on the American continent, inculding its inner situation of the new settlements as well. The part of the work is dedicated to the development of England and its complicated relations to other European colonial powers leading many times to conflicts involving even overseas areas. The study is finished by the reflection of the American War of Independence leading to disintegration of the First British Empire and appearance of the new power, the United States.
