Religion as a sphere: a revision of the concept of religion from the perspective of cultural sociologie

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje teoretický příspěvek k rozvoji sociologických teorií zabývajících se náboženstvím. Jejím cílem je nabídnout odpověď na otázku: „Jak je možné uchopit koncept náboženství, abychom v souvislosti s proměnou jeho postavení byli schopni odhalit obecné mechanismy a povahu sociální změny?“ Shrnuje debatu české sociologie náboženství, která se snaží vysvětlit výjimečně slabé postavení tradičních náboženství v české společnosti. Čeští autoři sice zmiňují vliv myšlenek a hodnot souvisejících s dobou národního obrození, ale nenabízí dostatečně propracovaný teoretický přístup, který by dokázal tato zjištění vysvětlit. Stejně jako v českém případě se ukazuje, že i teoretikové věnující se sekularizaci si všímají, že proměna náboženství znamená i proměnu hodnotové struktury společnosti. Tato práce nabízí skrze perspektivu kulturní sociologie přístup ke studiu náboženství, který by umožnil tuto změnu zachytit a popsat její mechanismus. Sociální změna se neodehrává pod vlivem neosobních sociálních struktur, ale jde o konkrétní symbolické jednání konkrétních aktérů. V přístupu kulturní sociologie se náboženství jeví jako určitý vzor symbolů a významů neboli sféru. Sféry představují určitý utopický projekt správného uspořádání společnosti a aplikace binárního kódu, který tvoří jejich základ výrazným způsobem ovlivňuje, jak budou vypadat dopady kulturních performancí. Na příkladu sexuálního skandálu katolické církve ukazuji, jak se od sebe může lišit výsledek kulturních performancí v závislosti na úspěšné interpretaci události perspektivou různých sfér. Abstract:

This thesis represents a theoretical contribution for sociological theories concerned with religion. Its goal is to answer a question: „How should be conceptualized a religion in order to find mechanism of social change in relation with changing position of religion in society?“ It sums up a debate inside czech sociology of religion, that is trying to explain exemptionaly low postiton of traditional religions in czech society. Czech autors are pointing towards an influence of ideas and values connected to the nation building period, but they are not developing deep theoretical perspective, that should be able to include that factor. Similarly to the czech approaches, theoretics of secularization theory are observing, that religious change brings change inside the value structure of society. This work is offering a cultural sociology perspective for studying religion. Using this approach we could be able to grasp the value change and describe the mechanism of this process. Social change is not leaded by impersonal social structures, but it is a consequence of individual symbolic actions of actirs. In the cultural sociology approach religion is a pattern of symbols and meanings, that can be desscribed as a sphere. Spheres are utopical projects of good society. They are influencing a social action and its consequences in the process of cultural performance by their binary codes of good and bad. Using an example of church sexual scandal in Europe, this paper shows, how different could be impact of succesful cultural performances depending on sphere's ability to enforce interpretation from its viewpoint.
