The effect of smoking on the corneal endothelium

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zkoumání vlivu pravidelného kouření tabákových výrobků na rohovkový endotel. V teoretické části práce jsou shrnuty poznatky o anatomii, histologii a funkci rohovky se zaměřením na její endotel. Dále jsou zde popsány příčiny a důsledky změn morfologie rohovkového endotelu a konkrétní vlivy kouření na oko, potažmo endotel rohovky. Záměrem praktické části je zjistit, zda kouření ovlivňuje buněčnou denzitu endotelu a jeho morfologii ve smyslu změn velikosti endotelových buněk a jejich hexagonality.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effect of regular smoking of tobacco products on the corneal endothelium. The theoretical part of the thesis summarizes the knowledge about the anatomy, histology and function of the cornea with a specific focus on its endothelium. The causes and consequences of changes in corneal endothelial morphology and the specific effects of smoking on the eye and corneal endothelium are also described. The intention of the practical part is to determine whether smoking affects the cell density of the endothelium and its morphology in terms of changes in endothelial cell size and hexagonality.
