Translation of a previously untranslated non-literary English text to Czech language, translation commentary and text analysis

Abstract:

This thesis conducts an analysis of the extra- and intratextual factors of both a non-literary English text (a collection of nine chapters selected from a popular scientific book The Essence - Discovering the World of Scent, Perfume & Fragrance, 2019) and its Czech translation based on Christiane Nord´s (1991) model. The analysis of the source text revealed its communicative situation, which was then compared with the translation Skopos according to which the target text was produced. The target text is complemented by a translation commentary based on the instructions of Mona Baker (2011). The commentary focuses primarily on equivalence at word level, equivalence above word level, and on cohesion. The commentary includes also an analysis of the translational strategies applied in dealing with non-equivalence, from which was concluded that the dominant strategies are generalization and translation by a paraphrase.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce provádí analýzu vnětextových a vnitrotextových faktorů neliterárního anglického textu (soubor devíti kapitol z populárně naučné knihy The Essence - Discovering the World of Scent, Perfume & Fragrance, 2019) a jeho českého překladu podle modelu Christiane Nordové (1991). Pomocí analýzy výchozího textu byla definována výchozí komunikační situace, která byla poté porovnána se skoposem překladu. Cílový text byl následně vyprodukován s ohledem na tento skopos. Analýza cílového textu je doplněna o překladatelský komentář, založený na instrukcích Mony Baker (2011), a zaměřuje se primárně na ekvivalencí na úrovni slov, ekvivalencí nad úrovní slov a na kohezi. Součástí komentáře je také analýza překladatelských postupů, které byly uplatněny v případech neekvivalence. Generalizace (zobecnění) a překlad pomocí parafráze byly z uplatněných postupů vyhodnoceny jako dominantní.
