The socio-economic and environmental impacts of timber harvesting on inhabitants of Kambui Hills Forest Reserve in Sierra Leone.

Abstract:

This study assesses the social, economic, and environmental effects of harvesting timber on residents around the Kambui Hills Forest Reserve, Kenema district in Sierra Leone. The methodology is a hybrid of regression analysis and descriptive statistical analysis. The regression analysis uses a time series data set (2010-2021) from United Nations data bases to specifically identify timber harvesting impacts of identified variables on the environment, the economy and the social fabrics of Sierra Leone. The descriptive statistical analysis uses primary data collected from the survey area. Data were collected in a controlled survey from four communities, using a questionnaire formulated according to guidelines recommended by Babbie and Mouton (2010). The Reliability test shows a 0.68 internal consistency among the latent variables (Cronbach alpha test). Results from the primary survey using confirmatory factor analysis confirmed that the factors that influence environmental impacts from timber harvesting have a 1.08 Eigen values and explained 12 % of the total variance. Similarly, the economic impacts from timber harvesting have 1.08 Eigen values and explained 20 % of the total variance. In the same vein, the social impacts from timber harvesting in the study area has 1.63 Eigen values and explained 19 % of the total variance. Results from regression analysis confirmed that R² or the coefficient of determination is 0.5734, which shows that 57 % of the dependent variable is significantly explained by the independent variables in the model representing environmental impacts. Similarly, the economic impact shows an R² or the coefficient of determination of 0.8596, which indicates that 86 % of the dependent variable is significantly explained by the independent variables in the model. For the social impacts, R² or the coefficient of determination shows an R-square of 0.9667. This is statistically significant as 97 % of the dependent variable is explained by the independent variables in the model. Thus, both models confirmed the socio-economic effects of harvesting timber and its environmental impact on the Kambui Hills Forest Reserve in Kenema district, Sierra Leone. This study will conclude with recommendations to the relevant stakeholders in Sierra Leone.

Tato studie hodnotí sociální, ekonomické a environmentální dopady těžby dřeva na obyvatele v okolí lesní rezervace Kambui Hills, okres Kenema v Sierra Leone. Metodika je hybridem regresní analýzy a deskriptivní statistické analýzy. Regresní analýza využívá soubor dat časových řad (2010-2021) z databází OSN ke konkrétní identifikaci dopadů identifikovaných proměnných při těžbě dřeva na životní prostředí, ekonomiku a sociální strukturu Sierry Leone. Popisná statistická analýza využívá primární data shromážděná ze zkoumané oblasti. Data byla shromážděna v kontrolovaném průzkumu ze čtyř komunit pomocí dotazníku formulovaného podle pokynů doporučených Babbie a Mouton (2010). Test spolehlivosti ukazuje vnitřní konzistenci 0,68 mezi latentními proměnnými (Cronbachův alfa test). Výsledky primárního průzkumu pomocí konfirmační faktorové analýzy potvrdily, že faktory, které ovlivňují environmentální dopady těžby dřeva, mají vlastní hodnoty 1,08 a vysvětlují 12 % celkového rozptylu. Podobně ekonomické dopady z těžby dřeva mají 1,08 vlastních hodnot a vysvětlují 20 % celkového rozptylu. Ve stejném duchu mají sociální dopady těžby dřeva ve studované oblasti 1,63 vlastních hodnot a vysvětlují 19 % celkového rozptylu. Výsledky regresní analýzy potvrdily, že R² neboli koeficient determinace je 0,5734, což ukazuje, že 57 % závislé proměnné je významně vysvětleno nezávislými proměnnými v modelu reprezentujícími environmentální dopady. Podobně ekonomický dopad ukazuje R² neboli koeficient determinace 0,8596, což ukazuje, že 86 % závislé proměnné je významně vysvětleno nezávislými proměnnými v modelu. Pro sociální dopady ukazuje R² nebo koeficient determinace R-kvadrát 0,9667. To je statisticky významné, protože 97 % závislé proměnné je vysvětleno nezávislými proměnnými v modelu. Oba modely tedy potvrdily socioekonomické dopady těžby dřeva a jeho dopad na životní prostředí na lesní rezervaci Kambui Hills v okrese Kenema v Sierra Leone. Tato studie bude uzavřena doporučeními příslušným zúčastněným stranám v Sierra Leone.
