Issue of Author’s and Beholder’s Perception in Conceptual Art

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je podrobněji prozkoumat problematiku divácké a autorské percepce konceptuálního umění. Pomocí analýz několika zásadních děl světového konceptualismu, text ilustruje konkrétní percepční konflikty a podrobněji zkoumá související divácké a autorské přístupy. Práce se věnuje dílům konceptuálního předchůdce Marcela Duchampa, experimentům Roberta Rauschenberga a Johna Cage, či stěžejním dílům Josepha Kosutha. Práce se rovněž věnuje současné reakci na tyto umělce - tj. umělecké skupině Young British Artists a umělcům, jako byli Damien Hirst či Tracey Emin. Práce se v širším smyslu zabývá i pozicí konceptuálního umění v kontrastu k tradičnějším uměleckým disciplínám. Nastíněné jsou definice Sol Lewitta či Josepha Kosutha, a také důležitá pozice Marcela Duchampa, jakožto odpůrce „retinálního“ umění. Tyto přístupy rezonují v jiných částech textu, které se věnují podstatě “konceptu” jako takového a možným způsobům jeho vnímání.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to closely explore the subject of the author’s and beholder’s perception of conceptual art. By analysing several essential works of the conceptual movement, the text aims to to illustrate particular perceptual conflicts, and explore the related approaches of the beholder and the artist. The thesis deals with works of the conceptual precursor Marcel Duchamp, experiments of Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage, as well as the crucial works of Joseph Kosuth. The thesis also deals with the contemporary reaction to these artists - e.g. the “Young British Artists” movement and artists such as Damien Hirst or Tracey Emin. In a broader sense, the thesis deals with the position of conceptual art in contrast to the more traditional art disciplines. The text offers a short insight into the definitions of Sol LeWitt or Joseph Kosuth, as well ass to the important position of Marcel Duchamp as the opponent to “retinal” art. These approaches resonate in other parts of the text, which deal with actual meaning of “concepts” and the possible ways of perceiving them.
