Hercule Poirot as the opposite of Sherlock Holmes and their position within the genre of detective fiction

Abstract:

This thesis concentrates on answering the question whether detective Hercule Poirot created by Dame Agatha Christie is an exact opposite of Sherlock Holmes, or whether he is a copy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character. A number of books featuring these characters was read for completion of this work. After providing background information on the history of detective fiction and a biography of each writer, the focus of the thesis shifts to a comparison of the detectives in terms of their physical appearance, personal traits, cases in which they tend to be interested, their investigative methods, and iconic companions. The work also deals with rules that have been established for stories to be considered detective fiction, while the last part of the thesis discusses how the books of both authors read for the thesis follow these rules, and thus, indeed, belong to the genre of detective fiction.

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zodpovězení otázky, zda se postava Hercula Poirota vytvořená Agathou Christie dá považovat za protiklad Sherlocka Holmese, či zda se jedná o kopii charakteru z pera Arthura Conana Doyla. Za účelem srovnání byl přečten určitý počet knih, v nichž se zmínění detektivové objevují. Následně byla nastíněna historie žánru detektivní fikce, poté proběhlo zpracování biografií obou spisovatelů, načež bylo přistoupeno ke srovnání detektivů na poli vzhledu, povahy, případů, jež řešili, investigativních metod či ikonických společníků. Pozornost byla věnována také v minulosti stanoveným pravidlům pro psaní detektivní fikce, přičemž závěrečná část práce aplikuje tato pravidla na předem vybraná díla obou autorů za účelem potvrzení, že jak Agatha Christie, tak Arthur Conan Doyle skutečně patří k žánru detektivní fikce.
