Critical Theory of Social Movements

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá politickou teorií sociálních hnutí u tří klíčových představitelů Kritické teorie Frankfurtské školy. Jejím hlavním motivem je genealogie tzv. nových sociálních hnutí a analýza jejich vztahu ke staré (dělnické) levici v teoretických přístupech H. Marcuseho, J. Habermase a A. Honnetha. Způsob, jakým vysvětlují mobilizaci, povahu a politický potenciál sociálních hnutí je odvozen z jejich obecné teorie společnosti a sociální změny, dán do souvislosti s poklesem vlivu klasického marxistického paradigmatu politického protestu, a představen jako rys rostoucího významu kulturně orientované analýzy kolektivního jednání v této tradici politického myšlení. Závěrečná část práce u tří těchto přístupů zdůrazňuje několik klíčových společných prvků, a srovnává je s alternativním paradigmatem výzkumu sociálních hnutí. Pokouší se tím o zdůraznění existence svébytné a vnitřně koherentní analytické perspektivy - kritické teorie sociálních hnutí.

Abstract:

Thesis deals with the political theory of social movements as formulated by three key thinkers of the Critical theory of Frankfurt School. The main theme consists in genealogy of so-called New Social Movements and in analysis of their relationship with Old (labour) Left in theoretical frameworks of H. Marcuse, J. Habermas and A. Honneth. Mode of their explanation of mobilization, nature and political potential of social movements is derived from their general theories of society and societal change, associated with the decline of influence of classic marxist paradigm of political protest, and presented as an attribute of increasing importance of culturally oriented collective action analysis within this tradition of political thought. The closing part of thesis emphasizes several crucial joint features of the three approaches and compares them with alternative paradigm of social movement analysis, thus emphasizing an existence of a distinctive and internally coherent analytical perspective - of the critical theory of social movements.
