Earnings Management and Firms’ Behavior During the Global Financial Crisis: Comparative Analysis of Selected Common Law and Civil Law Countries

Řízení zisku a chování firem v období globální finanční krize: komparativní analýza vybraných států zvykového a kontinentálního práva

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá chováním firem v období globální finanční krize (2008-2009) ve Velké Británii, zástupci států zvykového práva, Německu a České republice, zástupcích států kontinentálního práva. Výzkum je prováděn na období 2006-2011. Hlavním zaměřením práce je řízení zisku (earnings management), nicméně celá řada analýz je věnována také rentabilitě, zadluženosti a míře zdanění firem. Teoretická část práce zahrnuje historii a specifika právních systémů, vznik a vývoj globální finanční krize a přehled dosavadního výzkumu v oblasti řízení zisku. Pro účely empirické části práce byla využita rozsáhlá databáze Amadeus. Analýzy rentability prokazují nejtvrdší dopad krize na evropské nefinanční podniky v letech 2008 a 2009. Jak firmy s nízkou mírou zadluženosti, tak firmy s vysokou mírou zadluženosti naznačují nižší rentabilitu než středně zadlužené firmy, což je v souladu s teoriemi kapitálové struktury. Analýzy zadluženosti ukazují postupné snižování míry zadluženosti nefinančního sektoru. Přesněji řečeno, jednotlivé kategorie velikosti firem vykazují paralelní klesající trend ve Velké Británii, konvergentní klesající trend v Německu a divergentní klesající trend v České republice. Analýzy míry zdanění naznačují znatelný vliv vládních daňových podpor v období krize. Z hlediska analýzy řízení zisku nalézám nejvyšší míru řízení zisku v České republice a nejnižší míru řízení zisku ve Velké Británii. V České republice je detekována tendence firem nadhodnocovat zisk v roce 2009, což naznačuje převahu tzv. strategie earnings-smoothing v období krize. Naproti tomu ve Velké Británii a Německu je v letech 2008-2009 detekována tendence firem podhodnocovat zisk naznačující převahu tzv. strategie big-bath v období krize. Obecně platí, že středně velké firmy spíše zisky podhodnocují, než nadhodnocují. Velmi velké firmy ve Velké Británii a Německu využívají v předkrizovém a pokrizovém období spíše nadhodnocování zisku než podhodnocování zisku. Velmi velké firmy ve všech třech státech v průběhu krize naznačují použití tzv. strategie big-bath.

Abstract:

The dissertation deals with firms’ behavior during the global financial crisis (2008-2009) in the UK, the common law representative, Germany and the Czech Republic, the civil law representatives. Period of 2006-2011 is investigated. Earnings management of companies is primary focus of the research; nevertheless, multiple analyses regarding profitability, leverage and taxation characteristics of companies are undertaken. Theoretical part of the dissertation covers history and characteristics of legal families, genesis and development of the global financial crisis, and previous research on earnings management. Broad datasets from Amadeus database are used under empirical part of the dissertation. Profitability analyses prove the severest impact of the crisis on European non-financial companies in 2008 and 2009. Both lightly and highly leveraged companies indicate lower profitability than moderately leveraged companies which is in line with capital structure theories. Leverage analyses show gradual decrease in leverage ratio within non-financial sector, more specifically, individual firm-size categories exhibit parallel declining trend in the UK, converging declining trend in Germany, and diverging declining trend in the Czech Republic. Taxation analyses suggest high influence of governments’ tax relief programs in the crisis period. Earnings management analyses detect the highest level of earnings management in the Czech Republic while the lowest in the UK. Czech companies engaged in upward earnings management in 2009 indicating the earnings-smoothing strategy during the crisis period. By contrast, downward earnings management is detected in the UK and Germany in 2008 and 2009 suggesting the big-bath strategy. In general, medium-sized companies are more likely engaged in downward earnings management than upward earnings management. Regarding pre-crisis and post-crisis period, very large companies in the UK and Germany are more likely engaged in upward EM than downward EM. During the crisis period, very large companies in all the three economies likely used the big-bath strategy.
