Host specificity of the bryophagous beetles of Byrrhidae family

Abstract:

Byla provedena analýza obsahu trávicího traktu 115 jedinců 2 rodů čeledi Byrrhidae. Druhy Byrrhus arietinus, Byrrhus pilula, Byrrhus glabratus, Byrrhus pustulatus a Cytilus sericeus byly zaznamenány. Bylo zjištěno, že oba rody jsou striktně bryofágní. Strava se skládala téměř výhradně z fyloidů mechů. Bylo odhaleno 17 druhů mechů pro rod Byrrhus a 11 druhů mechů pro rod Cytilus. Objem chymu byl větší u brouků rodu Byrrhus. Samice rodu Byrrhus konzumovaly více potravy než samci. U rodu Cytilus byly zaznamenány pouze samice. Nejčastěji se v trávicím traktu vyskytoval jen jeden druh mechu. Rod Byrrhus konzumoval zejména druh Polytrichastrum formosum (48,15 % jedinců). Rod Cytilus konzumoval především druh Dicranella heteromalla (68,85 % jedinců). Jedinci druhu Byrrhus pilula často konzumovali jiné druhy mechu, než na jakém byli nalézáni. Brouci, kteří byli nalezeni mimo les, se vyskytovali téměř výhradně na mechu Ceratodon purpureus.

Abstract:

The analysis of alimentary tract content was carried out in 115 specimens of 2 genera of family Byrrhidae. The species Byrrhus arietinus, Byrrhus pilula, Byrrhus glabratus, Byrrhus pustulatus and Cytilus sericeus were recorded. It was found out that both genera are strictly bryophagous. The diet consisted almost exclusively of moss phylloids. It was revealed 17 species of mosses for the genus Byrrhus and 11 species of mosses for the genus Cytilus. The volume of chyme was larger in genus Byrrhus. The females of genus Byrrhus feed more food than males. Only females were recorded for genus Cytilus. One species of moss occured most often in alimentary tract content. The genus Byrrhus feed particularly on species Polytrichastrum formosum (48,15 % of specimens). The genus Cytilus feed especially on species Dicranella heteromalla (68,85 % of specimens). The specimens of the species Byrrhus pilula feed often on other species of mosses than the mosses where they were found. The beetles who were found outside the forest occur almost exclusively on moss Ceratodon purpureus.
