U.S. Engagement in the War in Kosovo 1998-1999: Just War Theory

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá teorií spravedlivé války a aplikací jejích principů na americké angažmá ve válce v Kosovu. V teoretické části budou rozebrány nejprve nejdůležitější přístupy k etice mezinárodních vztahů a války, dále budou zmíněny kořeny teorie spravedlivé války a její vývoj s ohledem na nejdůležitější klasické autory. Největší rozsah bude věnován rozboru jednotlivých principů teorie spravedlivé války. Ty budou detailně analyzovány. Též budou identifikovány debaty a interpretace, které ovlivňují jejich výklad. V empirické části bude nejprve nastíněna válka v Kosovu. Zde bude popsáno pozadí a příčiny konfliktu, průběh ozbrojených bojů a také jejich důsledky. Největší pozornost však bude věnována aplikaci principů teorie spravedlivé války na americké jednání před, během i po tomto ozbrojeném zásahu. Tato analýza nám umožní vyhodnotit, zda bylo jednání USA v souladu s principy zmíněné teorie.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with just war theory and application of its principles on the American engagement in the Kosovo war. In the theoretical part, first will be analyzed the most important approaches to ethics of international relations and war, further will be mentioned roots of just war theory and its development with respect to the most important classic authors. The largest scope will be devoted to the analysis of individual principles of just war theory. They will be analyzed in detail. There will be also an identification of debates and interpretations that influence their explanation. In the empirical part, first will be outlined the Kosovo war. Here will be described the background and causes of the conflict, process of armed struggle and also its consequences. The biggest attention will be devoted to the application of principles of just war theory to the American actions before, during and after this armed intervention. This analysis helps us with evaluating the U.S. actions and their concordance with principles of the theory.
