Becoming the Taijiquan Body: The Analysis of the Eighteen Movements Form

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je koncipována jako projekt etnografického výzkumu. Zkoumanou oblastí je symbolický a materiální prostor brněnského klubu tchaj-ti Davida Pirochty, který se soustředí na předávání čínského bojového umění chen tchaj-ti quan. Tchaj-ti je založeno na představách o těle, které pocházejí z čínské kosmologie a z filozofie taoismu. Brněnští tchaj-ti cvičenci jsou konfrontováni s těmito představami, které aktivně ztělesňují neustálým opakováním forem, stávají se „tělem kultury“. Teoretickým rámcem této práce je teorie habitusu antropologa Pierra Bourdieuho (1998) rozšířená výzkumem habitusu boxerů Loïca Wacquanta (2004). Základním zkoumaným fenoménem je, jak představy o našem těle ovlivňují percepci samotnou. Na základě prací o ztělesněném vnímání George Lakoffa a Marka Johnsona (2003) projekt otevírá debatu o míře svobody, kterou při tvoření naší tělesné identity máme. V rámci předvýzkumu analyzuje významy jednotlivých pohybů formy „osmnácti pohybů“ stylu Chen. Projekt si dává za cíl vytvoření metodologického a metodického prvotního bodu, vstupu do terénu, ze kterého bude možné pokračovat ve výzkumu pohybů, tvořících symbolickou strukturu tchaj-ti těla, a jejich individuálních významů pro cvičence, tedy jak ztělesňování odlišných konceptů těla ovlivňuje jejich percepci.

Abstract:

This thesis is conceived as a project of ethnographic research. Topic of research is a symbolical and physical space of martial art club from the city of Brno that is focused on passing the knowledge of Chen Taijiquan. Taijiquan is based on particular concepts of the body, derived from Chinese cosmology and philosophy of Taoism. Adepts of Taijiquan are confronted with these different concepts, which are actively embodied by constant repetition of the form of eighteen movements. The theoretical perspective of this thesis is the theory of habitus, constructed by the anthropologist Pierre Bourdieu (1998) and further expanded by the research of habitus by Loïc Wacquant (2004). The main focus or phenomenon of this work is a question, how the different concepts of a body are influencing our perception and mind. Based on the work of embodied cognition from George Lakoff and Mark Johnson (2003) the thesis asks a question about the level of freedom that we have in constructing of our own body identities, the habitus. As part of a pilot study, work analyzes the meanings of particular motions of the Form of Eighteen Movements. The project is aimed to create a methodological and methodical initial point of entry into the field from which it will be possible to continue in the research of movements, that are forming a symbolical structure of the Taijiquan body, their individual meanings for gymnasts and how their perception is affected in that process.
