Dispositional optimism and defensive pessimism in relation to coping strategies of university students in times of restrictive anti-pandemic measures

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá vztahem mezi dispozičním optimismem, defenzivním pesimismem a copingovými strategiemi vysokoškolských studentů v době omezujících protipandemických opatření. Dále se zaměřuje na vztah mezi dispozičním optimismem a mírou prožívaného stresu v období pandemie. Dílčím záměrem je zjištění rozdílů mezi pohlavími v prožívaném stresu v souvislosti s COVID-19. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V teoretické části jsou prezentované poznatky, které slouží k hlubšímu teoretickému pochopení sledovaných vztahů. V empirické části je zahrnut výzkum, jehož cílem je tyto vztahy lépe poznat a popsat. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 199 studentů českých vysokých škol ve věkovém rozmezí 19 – 49 let. Testová baterie zahrnovala Test životní orientace (LOT-R), Dotazník defenzivního pesimismu (DPQ), Inventář copingových strategií (CSI) a Dotazník míry stresu u vysokoškolských studentů během COVID-19 (CSSQ). Na základě korelační analýzy se ukázalo, že dispoziční optimisté a dispoziční pesimisté se příliš neliší ve svých copingových strategiích v době omezujících protipandemických opatření. Výsledky výzkumu však potvrdily, že dispoziční optimisté prožívají nižší míru stresu během pandemie než dispoziční pesimisté. Výsledky t-testu nepotvrdily signifikantní rozdíly mezi pohlavími v míře prožívaného stresu v souvislosti s COVID-19.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the relationship between dispositional optimism, defensive pessimism, and coping strategies of university students in times of restrictive anti-pandemic measures. It also focuses on the relationship between dispositional optimism and the level of COVID-19-related stress. A partial intention is to find out the differences between the gender in the COVID-19-related stress. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part presents knowledge that serves for a deeper theoretical understanding of the observed relationships. The empirical part includes research that aims to better understand and describe these relationships. The total sample consisted of 199 students at Czech universities in the age range of 19 to 49 years old. The test battery included the Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R), the Defensive Pessimism Questionnaire (DPQ), the Coping Strategies Inventory (CSI), and the COVID-19 Student Stress Questionnaire (CSSQ). Based on the correlation analysis, it turned out that dispositional optimists and dispositional pessimists do not differ much in their coping strategies in times of restrictive anti-pandemic measures. However, the results of the research confirmed that dispositional optimists experience lower levels of COVID-19-related stress than dispositional pessimists. The results of the t-test did not confirm significant gender differences in the COVID-19-related stress.
