Environmental aspects of the lifestyle of Czech singles

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá výzkumem životního způsobu českých singles. Jejím cílem je analýza environmentálně příznivých a nepříznivých aspektů, které životní způsob singles obnáší. Teoretická část se opírá především o individualizační teorie a má za cíl poskytnout oporu části analytické. Práce v sobě spojuje sociologický zájem o singles s pohledem environmentalistickým. V environmentálním kontextu se dosavadní výzkumy zaměřují především na kvantitativní deskripci negativních aspektů života singles. Ten bývá stereotypně dáván do souvislostí s environmentálně plýtvavým konzumním stylem života. Takovýto pohled však má práce problematizuje. Pomocí kvalitativně-kvantitativních metod analyzuji vybrané aspekty životního způsobu singles v oblastech: spotřeby, práce, volného času, vztahů a bydlení. Hlavním nástrojem získávání dat byly polostandardizované rozhovory realizované s 36 komunikačními partnery. Ty jsem vybral pomocí „cíleného výběru“ (targeted sampling) jak z běžné populace, tak z řad environmentalistů. K analýze rozhovorů byla použita metoda zakotvené teorie (grounded theory). Druhým metodologickým východiskem pro mě byla upravená metoda „go along“ – komentovaná prohlídka domácností zkoumaných singles. Poslední metodou byla analýza spotřeby realizovaná na základě dat sebraných prostřednictvím dotazníku. Díky ní jsem dokázal vyčíslit ekologickou a uhlíkovou stopu zkoumaných singles a identifikoval jsem některé nepříznivé aspekty jejich životního způsobu. Následně jsem se zabýval tím, jak tyto aspekty komunikační partneři sami interpretují. Na základě analýzy jejich výpovědí jsem vytvořil čtyři rozlišné kategorie životního způsobu zkoumaných singles: poustevníci, ekologičtí občané, nazelenalí a neuvědomělí. Tato typologizace může prospět diversifikovanějšímu pohledu na životní způsob singles, který nelze jednoznačně považovat za environmentálně nepříznivý. Práce může být přínosná zejména s ohledem na budoucí očekávaný nárůst singles v populaci, se kterým se bude muset naše společnost vyrovnat.

Abstract:

This dissertation is based on research into the lifestyle of Czech singles. Its goal is to analyze the environmentally friendly and unfriendly aspects of the lifestyle of singles. The theoretical section is based on the theory of individualization, and its goal is to provide a framework for the analytical section. This dissertation combines sociological interest in singles with an environmentalist perspective. In the context of environmental research, studies conducted so far have primarily focused on quantitative descriptions of the negative aspects of singles' lives. Their lives are stereotypically associated with an environmentally wasteful, consumerist lifestyle. My dissertation, however, questions this approach. I use qualitative-quantative methods to analyze select aspects of the lifestyle of singles in the following areas: consumption, work, free time, relationships, and housing. Data was mainly collected using semi-standardized interviews conducted with 36 respondents. I selected my interviewees using targeted sampling both from the general population and from among environmentalists. Grounded theory was used to analyze the interviews. I also utilized a modified version of the "go-along" method, involving a commented "tour" of the households of the studied singles. Finally, consumption was analyzed on the basis of data collected using a survey. This method allowed me to quantify the ecological and carbon footprint of the examined singles, and I identified several environmentally unfriendly aspects of their lifestyle. I then dealt with how my interviewees interpreted these aspects themselves. On the basis of an analysis of their responses, I created four different categories of the studied singles: hermits, ecological citizens, greenish, and the non-conscious. This typology may contribute to a more diversified view of the lifestyle of singles, which cannot be definitively considered to be environmentally unfriendly. This dissertation may be beneficial considering the expected growth in singles in the future with which our society will have to deal.
