The Reflection of Social and Economic Isuess of the United States of America in Charles Chaplin's and D. W. Griffith's Works

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá odrazem hospodářského a sociálního vývoje Spojených států amerických ve filmech dvou předních umělců němé kinematografie ? Charlese Chaplina a D. W. Griffitha. Mým cílem bylo analyzovat pohled obou filmařů na soudobé problémy ? rasismus, postavení žen, chudobu, imigraci apod. V závěru předkládám stručný nástin odrazu společenských témat v dílech jiných významných režisérů němé kinematografie.

Abstract:

This master degree deals with reflection of economic and social development of the United States of America in movies directed by two leading artists of the silent cinematography ? Charles Chaplin and D. W. Griffith. I aimed to analyse the view of both filmmakers on contemporary issues ? racism, role of women, poverty, immigration etc. At the end, I'm presenting a brief summary of social themes reflection in the work of other significant silent era directors.
