Facies and anthropogenic contamination of recent river-bed sediments of Dřevnice

Abstract:

Mezi důležitá uložiště sedimentu transportovaného řekou, patří vedle sedimentárních archívů povodňových plošin, slepých ramen a přehradních nádrží i korytové sedimenty. Těžké kovy a perzistentní organické polutanty (polutanty) jsou zde obvykle vázány na jílové minerály nebo organickou hmotu. Cílem této práce je stručně popsat a vysvětlit vybrané fenomény, které bezprostředně souvisí se studiem fluviálních sedimentů řeky Moravy a jejich antropogenním ovlivněním z poměrně znečištěné aglomerace Zlína a Otrokovic. Jednalo se zejména o: a) popis rozdílů mezi přirozenými a regulovanými říčními koryty, b) faciální vymezení přírodních a regulovaných korytových sedimentů, c) popsání vztahu mezi litofaciemi korytových/povodňových sedimentů, magnetickou susceptibilitou (MS) a obsahem těžkých kovů (Cu, Pb, Zn), a d) stanovení míry antropogenního ovlivnění sedimentů pomocí faktoru obohacení (enrichment factor; EF). Významná část říční kontaminace je ukládána v poměrně rozlehlých, k břehům přiléhajících sedimentárních tělesech, která vykazují relativně vysokou rychlost akumulace – až 2 cm/rok. Korytové facie představují významný faktor ovlivňující úroveň znečištění těžkými kovy. Navzdory zažitým znalostem není kontaminace těžkými kovy vyjádřená pomocí faktoru obohacení vázána pouze na jemnozrnné facie, ale značná část kontaminace je obsažena v hrubozrnných píscích. Významným nosičem velké části těžkých kovů jsou magnetické částice, které obsahují zvýšené koncentrace Cu, Pb a Zn. Vzhledem ke svojí vysoké hustotě jsou magnetické částice přednostně akumulovány v hrubějších faciích. Z relativního datování sedimentů jezera Čerťák, založené na detailní stratigrafii vrtných jader, GPR profilech, environmentálních interpretacích, historických datech a 137Cs datování, vyplynula vysoká akumulační rychlost 7,07,7 cm/rok. Úroveň znečištění jezera Čerťák výrazně vzrostla mezi rokem 1930 a počátkem 80. let. 20. století, kromě V, Co, Ni a Mo. Od konce 80. let, resp. počátku 90. let do roku 2005 postupně úroveň znečištění klesala, zejména u Cr, Cd, Sb, As, Zn a Hg. Vertikální distribuce těžkých kovů (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd a As) a fosforu vykazují silné kolísání, které odpovídá povodňovým vrstvám. Koncentrace těchto prvků (i když jsou normalizovány na Al) dramaticky klesají v písčitých povodňových vrstvách. Velikost těchto výkyvů převyšuje dlouhodobý trend vývoje koncentrací, což naznačuje, že dlouhodobý vývoj může být silně ovlivněn depozičními událostmi a měl by být interpretován obezřetně a s pozorností věnovanou sedimentárním faciím. Distální povodňové sedimenty jsou vhodné pro rekonstrukci historického regionálního znečištění, kdežto korytové a břehové sedimenty regulovaného říčního koryta kvalitativně odrážejí spíše aktuální lokální kontaminaci říčních systémů.

Abstract:

River-bed sediments along with floodplains, oxbow-lakes and dams represent the most important archives of fluvial sedimentation. Heavy metals (HM) and persistent organic pollutants (POP´s) are mostly bounded to fine-grained clay minerals and organic substances. The aim of this thesis is to briefly describe and explain selected phenomena that are closely connected with the study of fluvial sediments of the Morava River and anthropogenic influences from relatively polluted agglomeration of Zlín and Otrokovice. These are in particular: a) description of the differences between natural and regulated river bed, b) description of natural and regulated river-bed sediment facies, c) relationship between river-bed and floodplain deposit facies, magnetic susceptibility (MS) and content of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn), d) determining the level of anthropogenic influence using sediment enrichment factor (EF). A significant portion of the river contamination is stored in a relatively large sedimentary bodies adjacent to the shores that exhibit relatively high accumulation rates - up to 2 cm/year. River-bed facies constitute an important factor affecting the level of pollution by heavy metals. Despite the deeply rooted knowledge heavy metals contamination is not expressed in terms of enrichment factor binding only on the fine-grained facies, but much of the contamination is contained in coarse sands. Magnetic particles are important carriers of heavy metals that contain higher concentrations of Cu, Pb and Zn. Due to their high density magnetic particles are preferentially accumulated in the coarser facies. The relative dating of sediments of Lake Čerťák, based on the detailed stratigraphy of drill cores, GPR profiles, environmental interpretations, historical data and 137Cs dating, revealed high accumulation rate of 7.0 to 7.7 cm/year. The level of pollution of Lake Čerťák, except V, Co, Ni and Mo, increased significantly between 1930 and the early 80th of 20th century. Since the end of the 80th, respectively the early 90th to 2005 pollution levels gradually declined, especially for Cr, Cd, Sb, As, Zn and Hg. The vertical distribution of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd and As) and phosphorus exhibit strong fluctuations corresponding to flood layers. The concentrations of these elements (even if they are normalized to Al) dramatically decreases in sandy flood layers. The size of these fluctuations above the long-term trend in concentrations, suggesting that long-term development may be strongly influenced by the deposition events and should be interpreted with the caution and attention to the sedimentary facies. The distal flood sediments are suitable for the reconstruction of the historical regional pollution, while the river-bed and bank deposits qualitatively reflect more current local contamination of regulated river systems.
