Coping strategies and stress managing among policemen

Abstract:

This study considers theoretical and empirical research of coping strategies used by police officers in situations with trauma potential. The theoretical section reviews current knowledge in the field of Police Stress and Management of Stress. Information about 52 Slovak police officers were obtained via questionnaire, the results of which are analyzed in the empirical section. This Study concludes that one of the most preferred coping strategies is coping focused on problem control, and coping focused on escape from emotions . We did not confirm a relationship between accumulated trauma and coping strategies via social support. These findings can be applied in the field of Stress Management. The study also finds a need for terminological unification in the field of coping. Also there is a reason for looking at this phenomenon in a finer level of coping strategies segmentation. Added benefit of this study is that it is one of a very small number that focuses on a sample of police officers from a Slovak and Czech cultural context.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá teoretickým a empirickým skúmaním copingových stratégií využívaných príslušníkmi policajného zboru v situáciách s traumatizujúcim potenciálom. Teoretická časť poskytuje prierez doterajšími poznatkami v oblasti teórie stresu a jeho manažmentu v prostredí zasahujúcich zložiek policajného zboru. V empirickej časti prostredníctvom dotazníka získavame informácie o copingových stratégiách 52 slovenských policajných príslušníkov konfrontovaných so situáciami s traumatizujúcim potenciálom. Štúdia potvrdila, že jednou z najpreferovanejších stratégií zvládania záťaže policajtami je coping zameraný na kontrolu problému, ako aj coping zameraný na únik od emócií. Nepotvrdil sa vzťah medzi kumulovaním záťaže a stratégiou vyhľadania sociálnej opory. Zistenia ponúkajú svoje uplatnenie v oblasti vzdelávania zasahujúcich pracovníkov v manažmente stresu. Štúdia potvrdzuje potrebu zjednotenia psychologickej terminológie v oblasti copingu a copingových stratégií, ako aj opodstatnenie skúmať tento fenomén i na jemnejších úrovniach členenia jednotlivých kategórií stratégií. Prínos štúdie spočíva v tom, že ako jedna z mála fokusuje na vzorku policajtov zo slovensko - českého kultúrotvorného kontextu.
