Statistical testing of Japanese candlestick formations

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je empirické testování využitelnosti japonských svíčkových formací pro předvídání budoucího cenového vývoje a pro krátkodobé spekulační obchodování. Výsledky jsou interpretovány v kontextu teorie efektivních trhů, jež předpokládá, že metody technické analýzy jsou neúčinné pro předvídaná tržního vývoje a dosahování zisku. V teoretické části práce je představena technická analýza jako jedna z metod tržních analýz. Poté jsou popsány japonské svíčkové grafy a svíčkové formace, jako jedny z nejstarších a základních metod technické analýzy. Dále je nastíněn historický vývoj základních stavebních kamenů technické analýzy. V další části je přiblížena teorie efektivních trhů a její implikace pro investiční rozhodování na základě technické analýzy. V praktické části je nejprve popsána metoda postupu při testování svíčkových formací na datech E-mini S&P 500 futures kontraktu. Dále jsou vyhodnoceny výsledky provedeného testování svíčkových formací. Nejprve jsou vyhodnoceny in-sample výsledky, poté jsou analyzovány out-of-sample výsledky a na závěr je určena statistická významnost zjištěných výsledků. Bylo zjištěno, že pouze 2 svíčkové formace z 19 dosáhly statisticky významnějších průměrných denních výnosů oproti indexu S&P 500. Jednalo se o svíčkové formace Hammer a Harami Bulish.

Abstract:

The goal of this master's thesis is empirical evaluation of predictive ability and profitability of Japanese candlesticks. The results are interpreted in the context of efficient market hypothesis, which concludes, that technical analysis is useless for predicting market prices and profitable trading. The theoretical part first describes technical analysis as one of the methods of market analysis. After that, the focus is on describing Japanese candlesticks as one of the basic and also oldest methods of technical analysis.Historical evolution of basic tenets of technical analysis is then presented. Efficient markets theory and its implications for technical analysis and investing is subject of next chapter. The empirical part begins with describing the process and method of statistical testing of candlesticks. Next follows the evaluation and analysis of obtained results. First part deals with analysis of in-sample results. The second part deals with analysis of out-of-sample results. In the last part, the results are evaluated from the point of statistical significance. It was found, that only 2 out of 19 candlestick formations were able to produce statisticaly significant average daily returns over S&P 500 index. Only the Hammer and Harami Bulish candlestick patterns were able to do it.
