Emotion regulation and problematic gaming in queer gamers

Abstract:

Hraní videoher se u queer lidí v poslední době stává čím dál tím častějším prostředkem zábavy a odreagování. Queer lidé zažívají v průměru více stresu než heterosexuální lidé, zvlášť kvůli minoritním stresorům. Se zhoršenou emoční regulací tedy může dojít k tomu, že si budou queer lidé tento stres a negativní emoce s ním spojené kompenzovat excesivním hraním videoher. Neschopnost řešit tento stres adaptivně, jako jeden z aspektů zhoršené emoční regulace, pak může vést k tomu, že hraní videoher potencionálně přeroste v hraní problematické. Tento vztah však zatím nebyl prozkoumán na populaci queer hráčů videoher. Cílem této práce tedy bylo prozkoumat vztah mezi jednotlivými aspekty zhoršené emoční regulace a problematickým hraním právě u queer hráčů videoher. Data byla sbírána v rámci projektu Czech gamers a vzorek se skládal z 688 queer aktivních hráčů videoher ve věkovém rozmezí 18–60 let. Analýza byla provedena pomocí hierarchické lineární regrese a výsledky naznačují, že jediným významným prediktorem problematického hraní ze všech aspektů zhoršené emoční regulace jsou problémy s kontrolou impulzivního chování. Vyšší míra špatné kontroly impulzivních reakcí tedy u queer lidí souvisí s vyšší mírou problematického hraní. U ostatních aspektů emoční regulace nebyl nalezen významný vztah s problematickým hraním. Z výsledků lze tedy usoudit, že problémy s emoční regulací nemusí být dobrým prediktorem problematického hraní u queer lidí, jelikož vztahy jednotlivých aspektů s problematickým hraním vyšly v této práci zanedbatelné. Zhoršená kontrola impulzivních reakcí však stojí za hlubší prozkoumání a může sloužit k prevenci, či lepšímu porozumění při práci s queer lidmi závislými na hraní videoher.

Abstract:

Gaming has lately become a growing form of entertainment as well as a leisure activity for queer people. On average, queer people experience more stress than heterosexual people mainly because of minority stressors. This, with the contribution of problems with emotion regulation, can then lead to queer people coping with this stress by escaping to gaming, which can become excessive. Being unable to adaptively cope with this stress, as one of the aspects of difficulties with emotion regulation, can then lead to problematic gaming. This relationship was not yet tested on queer population. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to explore relationships of each aspect of difficulties with emotion regulation with problematic gaming in queer people. The data was collected during the project Czech gamers, and the sample consisted of 688 queer active gamers aged between 18 and 60 years. The analysis was conducted in the form of hierarchical linear regression. The results suggest that out of all the aspects of difficulties with emotion regulation, the only significant predictor of problematic gaming is difficulty with impulse control. Higher rates of problems with impulse control are thus related to higher rates of problematic gaming. No other significant relationship was discovered between an aspect of difficulties with emotion regulation and problematic gaming. It can be concluded that emotion regulation might not be a good predictor of problematic gaming for queer people, since the relationships of individual aspects with problematic gaming turned out to be negligible in this thesis. However, impulse control difficulties deserve further investigation. This may lead to a better understanding of their relationship with problematic gaming in queer gamers and exploring potential prevention methods for problematic queer gamers.
