Resourses and level of Work engagement and Burnout among Mayors in Czechia

Abstract:

Tato práce zkoumá míru pracovní angažovanosti a míru vyhoření u starostů obcí České republiky. Dále identifikuje zdroje pracovní angažovanosti u této cílové skupiny. Zabývá se i rozdíly v demografických proměnných (věk, pohlaví, vzdělání, velikost obce podle počtu obyvatel, typ obce dle rozsahu výkonu přenesené působnosti, uvolněný a neuvolněný typ funkce, počet volebních období ve funkci a zamýšlená kandidatura v příštím volebním období) v míře pracovní angažovanosti a syndromu vyhoření. Data byla získána v rámci projektu Specifika pracovní angažovanosti u vybraných profesí v kontextu pandemie COVID-19, který probíhal na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně pod vedením Mgr. Kateřiny Wolfové a PhDr. Zuzany Slováčkové, Ph.D. Do výzkumu se zapojilo 426 starostů obcí, z toho 76,3 % mužů (N=325) a 23,7 % žen (N=101) s průměrným věkem 52 let. Pro zjištění míry proměnných respondenti vyplnili škálu pracovní angažovanosti Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, škálu vyhoření Maslach Burnout Inventory MBI-GS, sociodemografický dotazník a škálu subjektivně vnímané důležitosti zdroje pracovní angažovanosti. Starostové obcí našeho výzkumu vykazovali vysokou míru pracovní angažovanosti (M=4,75) a střední míru vyhoření (M=1,87). Statisticky významný korelační vztah existuje mezi dimenzí bdělost a všemi dimenzemi vyhoření. Dále dimenze odhodlání negativně koreluje s cynismem a pozitivně koreluje s dimenzí snížená profesní účinnost, dimenze pohlcení v našem výzkumu pozitivně koreluje se sníženou profesní účinností. Dále celková pracovní angažovanost negativně koreluje s dimenzí cynismus a pozitivně koreluje s profesní účinností. Rozdíly v míře pracovní angažovanosti mezi skupinami starostů obcí byly shledány u proměnných pohlaví, věk, vzdělání, velikost obce, typ funkce, počet volebních období ve funkci a kandidatura v dalších volbách. Žádné rozdíly nebyly analýzou dat vyhodnoceny u typu obce. Rozdíly v míře vyhoření mezi skupinami starostů obcí byly shledány u proměnných pohlaví, věk, vzdělání, velikost obce, typ funkce, počet volebních období ve funkci a kandidatura v dalších volbách. Žádné rozdíly nebyly analýzou dat vyhodnoceny u typu obce. Nejvíce zastoupeným zdrojem pracovní angažovanosti byla u starostů v našem výzkumu smysluplnost práce. Smysluplnost vysvětluje i největší podíl (53,2 %) variability pracovní angažovanosti.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the level of work engagement and the level of burnout among mayors of Czech municipalities. It also identifies the resources of work engagement in this target group. Thesis deals with differences in demographic variables (age, gender, education, size of the municipality according to population, type of municipality according to the scope of delegated powers, vacant and unreleased type of function, number of election periods and intended candidacy during the election period) at the level of engagement and burnout. The data were distributed within the project Specifics of Work Engagement in Selected Professions in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which took place at Masaryk University in Brno leaded by Mgr. Kateřina Wolfová and PhDr. Zuzana Slováčková, Ph.D. 426 mayors of municipalities participated in the research, of which 76.3 % were men (N = 325) and 23.7 % were women (N = 101) with an average age of 52 years. To determine the degree of variables of respondents, they have filled in the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale, decided to burn out Maslach Burnout Inventory MBI-GS, sociodemographic questionnaire and the Scale of subjectively perceived importance of resources of work engagement. The mayors of our research showed a high level of work engagement (M = 4.75) and a medium level of burnout (M = 1.87). A statistically significant correlation exists between the vigor dimension and all burnout dimensions. Furthermore, the dimension of dedication negatively correlates with cynicism and positively correlates with the dimension of reduced professional efficiency, the dimension of absorption in our research positively correlates with reduced professional efficiency. Furthermore, overall work engagement is negatively correlated with the dimension of cynicism and positively correlated with professional efficiency. Differences in the level of work engagement between groups of mayors of municipalities were found in the variables gender, age, education, size of the municipality, type of function, number of election periods and candidacy in the next elections. No differences have been evaluated for the type of municipality. Differences in the level of burnout between groups of mayors of municipalities were found in the variables gender, age, education, size of the municipality, type of office, number of terms in office and candidacy in the next elections. No differences been evaluated for the type of municipality. The most represented resource of work engagement among mayors in our research was the meaningfulness of work. Meaningfulness is also explained by the largest share (53.2 %) of the variability of work exposure.
