Success rate of selected technical analysis methods in the stock market

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývala analýzou výnosnosti vybraných nástrojů technické analýzy na 25 amerických titulech od roku 2010 do roku 2020. V práci byly použity metody založené na jednoduchých klouzavých průměrech, exponenciálních klouzavých průměrech, dále metoda MACD a metoda využívající rekurentní neuronové sítě. Cílem práce bylo ověření, zda vybrané metody technické analýzy jsou schopny překonávat referenční metodu v podobě metody kup a drž. V rámci práce byly popsány základní informace o akciových trzích, o přístupech k nákupu a prodeji akcií. Detailně byly popsány použité metody a diskutovány jednotlivé výsledky. Celkově z vybraných metod překonala dlouhodobé držení akcií pouze metoda založená na dvou jednoduchých klouzavých průměrech. Metoda byla ovšem prakticky obtížně použitelná, jelikož bylo potřeba optimálně nastavit dva velmi proměnlivé parametry. Zajímavé výsledky vykázala metoda založená na rekurentních neuronových sítích, která v některých případech překonávala metodu kup a drž. Z prakticky použitelných metod technické analýzy uvedených v této práci dosahovala nejlepších výsledků. Výsledky zároveň ukázaly, že výběr akciového titulu byl mnohem důležitější než výběr metody obchodování.

Abstract:

The thesis dealt with the analysis of the performance of selected technical analysis tools on 25 US stocks from 2010 to 2020. The methods used in the thesis were methods based on simple moving averages and exponential moving averages, as well as the MACD method and a method using recurrent neural networks. The aim of the work was to verify whether the selected technical analysis methods are able to outperform the reference in the form of the buy and hold method. The thesis described the basic information about stock markets, approaches to buying and selling stocks. The methods were thoroughly described and explained. The individual results were discussed. Overall, only the method based on two simple moving averages outperformed the buy and hold method. However, the method was practically difficult to apply, as two highly variable parameters had to be optimally adjusted. The method based on recurrent neural networks showed interesting results, outperforming the buy and hold method in some cases. Of the practically applicable technical analysis methods presented in this paper, it achieved the best results. The results also suggested that the choice of stock was more important than the choice of trading method.
