Online/offline communication ratio and its influence on the friendship quality of early adults

Abstract:

Výzkum se zabýval poměrem online/offline interakce a frekvencí online a offline interakce a jejich vlivy na kvalitu přátelství mladých dospělých, která byla určena primárně třemi následujícími měřenými oblastmi: podobností, vzájemnou náklonností a intimitou. Vedlejším cílem studie bylo zmapovat aktuální situaci v tématu online a offline komunikace v přátelství z důvodu neustálého vývoje v této oblasti. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 293 osob ve věku 18 až 30 let. Na základě analýzy byly potvrzeny hypotézy, že přiklonění k offline komunikaci souvisí s větší vzájemnou náklonností a predikuje jej. U podobnosti byl nalezen opačný trend, než byl původně předpokládán, tedy bylo analýzou zjištěno, že přiklonění k offline komunikaci souvisí s větší podobností a predikuje ji. U intimity nebyla nalezena souvislost s poměrem online/offline interakce a ani se neukázal jako její prediktor, hypotézy tedy nebyly potvrzeny. U frekvence komunikace (obecně, online, i offline) byl potvrzen mírný vztah s podobností a vzájemnou náklonností, u intimity nebyl tento vztah potvrzen. Dále bylo zjištěno, že poměr online/offline interakce a frekvence interakce (obecně, online, i offline) se liší mezi obdobím na začátku přátelství a v aktuální době. Předpoklad, že kvalita přátelství se neliší mezi přátelstvími vzniklými online a offline v rámci určité délky trvání přátelství, se částečně potvrdil.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to find out whether and how an online/offline communication ratio and its frequency influence a friendship quality of early adults, with the quality being defined primarily by three following areas of interest: similarity, social attraction and intimacy. The secondary purpose of the study was to map current situation in the field of online/offline communication in friendship, considering the ceaseless development of this particular field. There was a total of 293 respondents aged 18 to 30 years. Analysis confirmed that there is a correlation between offline communication preference and greater social attraction, with the latter being predicted by the former. As far as similarity is concerned, it was found that offline communication preference predicts and is a correlative of greater similarity, which was contrary to the original supposition. Analysis shown no relationship between the online/offline communication ratio and intimacy. This hypothesis was therefore disproved. There was a slight correlation discovered between the frequency of (online, offline) communication and similarity and social attraction descriptors, whereas there was no such link with intimacy. Furthermore, it was determined that the online/offline communication ratio and communication frequency (in general, online, offline) differs at the present time from the state at the beginning of a friendship. The assumption that there is no difference in friendship quality between friendships established online or offline within a certain length of friendship was partially confirmed.
