Performance comparison in the Test for identification of exceptionally gifted pupils in Math in children taught by Hejný's method and children taught in a common way

Abstract:

Cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda se děti vyučované matematice Hejného metodou liší od dětí vyučovaných běžným způsobem ve výkonu v testu TIM3–5. Abychom na otázku dokázali odpovědět, zjišťovali jsme nejprve, zda učitelé vyučující matematiku Hejného metodou stráví ve výuce víc času konstruktivistickými metodami než učitelé vyučující běžným způsobem. Poslední výzkumnou otázkou bylo, zda se děti vyučované matema-tice Hejného metodou liší od dětí vyučovaných běžným způsobem ve způsobu chybování. Celkem bylo zkoumáno 223 žáků a 10 učitelů. Zjistili jsme, že učitelé vyučující matematiku Hejného meto-dou ve své práci využívají statisticky významně víc metod spadajících do konstruktivistického pojetí výuky matematiky než učitelé vyučující běžným způsobem. Hejného metoda pak vysvětluje 6,5 % rozptylu výkonu v testu TIM3–5 a děti vyučované touto metodou podávají vyšší výkon v testu TIM3–5. Vytvořili jsme také katego-rický systém pro chybování v testu TIM3–5 a dospěli k závěru, že skupiny žáků se od sebe liší v kategoriích chyba v porozumění, počítání, a v kategorii bez chyby. V ostatních kategoriích se žáci neliší.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine whether the children taught Math by Hejný’s method reach signifi-cantly different results in the test TIM3–5 compared to the children taught in a common way. To be able to an-swer this question, we firstly examined whether the teachers who teach Math by Hejný’s method spend more time during teaching with constructivist methods compared to the teachers who are teaching in a common way. The last research question was to examine whether the children taught Math in Hejný’s method differ from the children taught in a common way in the types of mistakes. We examined 223 pupils and 10 teachers. We found out that the teachers teaching by Hejný’s method use in their work significantly more constructivist methods compared to the teachers teaching in a common way. Hejný’s method explains 6,5 % of variance in achievement in the test TIM3–5 and children taught by this method perform higher in the test TIM3–5. We created a categorical system of mistake types for the test TIM3–5 and we concluded that the groups of pupils differ in categories mistake in understanding, counting and no mis-take. In other categories the pupils do not differ.
