Time perspective and midlife crisis

Abstract:

This paper is devoted to an overview of theoretical concepts of time perspective, its measurement capabilities and an overview of current trends in research on the topic. We also outline the possible connection between the time orientation of mid-aged people and the quality of their experiences in midlife. We discuss the concept of midlife crisis, developmental tasks connected to midlife and possible differences between genders. In the research part of our paper we attemp to discover unique experiences of mid-aged people in connection to their time orientation with the use of Interpretative phenomenological analysis. This way we gather a view on some of the universal topics which relate to time perspective of mid-aged people. We find that universal topics in connection to ones past are regret and missing of real relationships. In connection to their present participants found as most important topics like their attitude to work, neglecting their hobbies and social life. As an independent topic there were present considerations about their age. In relation to their future the most frequent topics were hope and desire to preserve their actual quality of life.

Abstract:

V práci sa venujeme prehľadu teoretických konceptov časovej perspektívy, možnosťami jej merania a prinášame prehľad aktuálnych trendov vo výskume k téme. Načrtneme možný vzťah medzi jedincovou časovou orientáciou a kvalitou prežívania jeho stredného veku. Rozoberieme tiež problematiku stredného veku, vývinové úlohy ktorými jedinec v tomto období prechádza a tiež možné rozdiely medzi pohlaviami. Vo výskumnej časti sa pomocou Interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy venujeme skúmaniu skúseností jedinca v období stredného veku, s prihliadaním na časový horizont, ku ktorému sa jeho výpovede o svojom živote vzťahujú. Týmto spôsobom získame náhľad na určité spoločné charakteristiky v časovej perspektíve ľudí v strednom veku. Výsledky naznačujú, že spoločnými témami vo vzťahu s vnímaním svojej minulosti je ľútosť a smútok za ozajstnými ľudskými vzťahmi. V prítomnosti respondenti kladú najväčší dôraz na svoj vzťah k práci, zanedbávanie svojich záľub a sociálne vzťahy. Pomerne samostatnou témou sa javili byť úvahy o svojom veku. Vo vzťahu k budúcnosti u respondentov prevláda nádej a túžba o zachovanie súčasnej kvality života.
