Why German as a foreign language? Motives for choosing study "German Language for Education" at the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis is focused on the motives for choosing the study of German language for education on the Faculty of Education at the Masaryk University Brno. The thesis is focused exclusively on the combined students of this field of study at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University. The theoretical part deals with the definition of so-called non-traditional students and furthermore it is focused on the teaching profession and related topics, starting with the definition of basic concepts, introducing of motivation for choosing of the teaching profession and the process of becoming teacher up to the starting of the teacher`s professional career. The practical part presents the research methodology and the results of the research itself. The goal was not only to reveal the motives that influence the students while choosing the type of the study but also to discover, what do they consider to be the advantages and disadvantages of the combined form of study or hence what kind of pitfalls do they usually face while doing that. Eight half-structured interviews with the students of combined study were conducted as a part of the research survey. The results suggest that the motivation for the study at the faculty are related mainly to the possibility of combined form of the study itself and the distance of the faculty from the residence of the future students. The motive for choosing the field of teaching the German language is often connected with the interest for foreign languages and the overall understanding of the teacher`s profession as relatively promising one. The results of the research should be used as an empirical base for discussion of motives of the combined students` choice and its progress.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem motivů výběru oboru Německý jazyk se zaměřením na vzdělávání na pedagogické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity v Brně. Práce se zaměřuje výhradně na studenty kombinované formy tohoto studia. Teoretická část se věnuje definici „netradičních studentů“ a dále se zaměřuje především na samotnou učitelskou profesi a témata s tím související, od vymezení základních pojmů, představení motivů výběru této profese a popisu procesu stávání se učitelem až po profesní dráhu učitelů. V praktické části je představena metodologie výzkumu, jsou zde představeny výsledky výzkumného šetření. Cílem bylo nejen odhalit motivy, které ovlivňují studenty při výběru studia, ale také zjistit, co považují za výhody a nevýhody při studiu kombinovanou formou, potažmo na jaká úskalí při studiu nejčastěji naráží. V rámci výzkumného šetření bylo provedeno osm polosturukturovaných rozhovorů se studenty kombinovaného studia zmiňovaného oboru. Výsledky naznačují, že motivy studia na fakultě souvisí nejčastěji s možností studia v kombinované formě a blízkost fakulty k místu bydliště budoucího studenta či budoucí studentky. Motiv volby oboru učitelství německého jazyka je pak často spojován se zájmem o jazyky a chápání učitelství jako relativně perspektivní profese. Výsledky by měly posloužit jako empirický podklad pro diskusi ohledně motivů volby kombinovaného studia i jeho průběhu.
