The possibilities of using geo-information technologies and their potential to complement traditional methods of historical-cartographic research on the example of Moravian cartography

Anotace:

Disertační práce se zabývá historicko-kartografickým výzkumem moravské kartografie 16. až 18. století. Cíle jsou rozděleny do dvou kategorií na badatelskou a metodickou část. Badatelská část se věnuje revizi stávajících poznatků o vybraných kartografických dokumentech s využitím online přístupu ke katalogizovaným a digitalizovaným mapovým sbírkám. V metodické rovině má práce za cíl posoudit možnosti rozšíření tradičních metod kartografické a kartometrické analýzy o nové postupy prostorové analýzy s využitím geoinformačních technologií. Stanovené cíle byly prověřovány na základě čtyř případových studií pokrývajících podstatnou část životního cyklu staré mapy od jejího vzniku po současný výzkum: • tradiční metody historicko-kartografického výzkumu s důrazem na využití online, katalogizovaných a digitalizovaných sbírek, • možnosti využití geoinformačních technologií v historicko-kartografické praxi, • sekundární zásahy a vlivy restaurování na kvalitu kartografických děl, • analýza grafických technik tisku a dochovaných tiskových desek. Mezi hlavní badatelské přínosy patří revize a doplnění informací o kartografické a geometrické kvalitě nejstarších moravských map a také inventarizace a popis jejich dochovaných výtisků a tiskových desek. Efektivita využití rozsáhlého fondu kartografických památek se odvíjí od podrobnosti bibliografických záznamů. Obecně jejich kvalita závisí na informační naplněnosti popisované mapy a odborných znalostech bibliografa. Výsledky historicko-kartografického výzkumu představují velký potenciál pro jejich zpřesnění a doplnění. Moderní metody geoinformačních nástrojů nabízí možnosti pro rozšíření aparátu tradičního kartografického výzkumu o nové postupy prostorové analýzy. S jejich přispěním byly získány nové poznatky k metodám konstrukce nejstarších moravských map v závislosti na komunikační síti a morfologii terénu. Komparativní analýza tiskových desek různého původu v čase a prostoru přispěla novými poznatky o technikách přípravy tiskových desek a postupech vztažených ke kartografické tvorbě. Provedený výzkum přiblížil vliv fyzického stavu dokumentů na výsledky kartografických a kartometrických analýz zejména v případě restaurování starých map.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis deals with the historical-cartographic research of Moravian car-tography of the 16th to 18th centuries. The objectives are divided into two catego-ries: the research part and the methodological part. The research part revises the existing knowledge on selected cartographic documents using on-line access to catalogued and digitized map collections. At the methodological level, the thesis aims to assess the possibilities of extending traditional methods of cartographic and cartometric analysis with new methods of spatial analysis using geographic in-formation technologies. The defined objectives were examined in four case studies covering a substantial part of the life cycle of an old map, from its creation to the cur-rent research: • traditional methods of historical and cartographic research with emphasis on the use of online, catalogued and digitized collections, • possibilities of using geo-information technologies in historical cartographic practice, • secondary interventions and the impact of restoration on the quality of carto-graphic works, • analysis of graphical printing techniques and preserved printing plates. The main research contributions include revising and filling in information about the cartographic and geometric quality of the oldest Moravian maps, as well as inventorying and describing preserved copies of maps and printing plates. How efficiently the extensive collection of catalogued, digitised and accessible carto-graphic documents is used, depends largely on the level of detail of the bibliographic records. In general, their quality is determined by the information content of the map being described and the expertise of the bibliographer. The results of historical-cartographic research present a great potential for their refinement and completion. Modern methods of geo-information tools offer the opportunity to extend the apparatus of traditional cartographic research with new methods of spatial analysis. With their contribution, new insights have been gained regarding the construction methods of the oldest Moravian maps in relation to the communication network and terrain morphology. The comparative analysis of printing plates of different origin in time and space provided new observations regarding the preparation methods of printing plates and the procedures related to cartographic production. The con-ducted research outlined how the physical condition of documents influences the results of cartographic and cartometric analyses, especially in the case of restor-ing old maps.
